COLOGNE/BONN – Seeing these ‘goals’ is enough to make anyone cheer. Eurowings has made a list of the world’s six most beautiful ‘goals’ just in time for the World Cup. Europe’s fastest-growing airline really does have something in common with the competing teams in that team spirit is required every single time a flight takes off. Italy: Port’Alba in Naples
Although Italy is not competing in the World Cup, this is one winning ‘goal’ that will still cause a sensation. The Port’Alba gate is a remnant of a tower on the ancient city walls of Naples and links the historic old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, with the more modern part of Naples. The Via Port’Alba – a hotspot for bookworms due to the many the booksellers here – starts directly behind the gate. Located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, Naples also impresses nature lovers; as the capital of pizzas, where the pizza Margherita was once invented, it inspires with culinary delights and, with a large number of museums and archaeological sites around ancient Pompeii, culture vultures also come into their own. France: Porte du Peyrou in Montpellier
The French city of Montpellier is a true insider tip for the south of France – and with Eurowings, it can be reached comfortably from Düsseldorf every Saturday. The Porte du Peyrou, a triumphal arch, is dedicated to Louis XIV, known as Louis the Great or the Sun King. It was built at the end of the 17th century and is reminiscent of its Parisian counterpart, the Arc de Triomphe. The archway stands at the entrance to the Jardin du Peyrou where you can enjoy the delicacies of the farmers’ market, held in the city’s Antigone district, in a unique atmosphere. Montpellier is well-known for its tasty treats from the sea or from sun-drenched trees and shrubs. The narrow French alleys are home to small boutiques and shops, the scent of lavender pervades the air and the warm sun of southern France flatters the complexion – the perfect place for a little break, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
England: Temple Bar Gate in London
Temple Bar Gate is the only surviving gateway of London’s original eight city gates but today it no longer stands where it was first built in 1293. Since it was increasingly becoming more of a hindrance than a help to the city’s fast-growing traffic, it was dismantled into individual pieces, i.e. 2,700 stones, in 1878 and rebuilt in a woodland clearing in Hertfordshire eight months later. At the beginning of the 21st century, the gate was dismantled once again, transported in its individual parts to the Paternoster Square complex and rebuilt to the north of St. Paul’s Cathedral. It can be accessed by anyone since the completion of construction work. Namibia: Rock Arch near the Spitzkoppe
Although Namibia is not playing in the World Cup, it nevertheless has a breathtaking ‘goal’ to offer in the guise of a natural stone gateway. In the summer (Namibia’s winter), Eurowings flies non-stop from Munich to Namibia every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Spitzkoppe is known as the Matterhorn of Namibia and is located less than three hours’ drive from the capital Windhoek. Hiking enthusiasts and climbers will be inspired by the impressive landscape around the Spitzkoppe. The mountain range was formed millions of years ago as a result of volcanic activity and, after many years of erosion, it now offers bizarre rock formations whose red granite rock glows in the sun, imparting an almost mystical atmosphere. One particularly well-known formation is a natural archway in the middle of the rocky landscape, called “The Bridge”. This stone gateway provides the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday photo.
Cuba: Barrio Chino in Havana
With Eurowings from Cologne to China in Cuba: at the end of the 19th century, some 150,000 Chinese immigrants fled to Cuba to escape persecution and settled in the “Barrio China” district. The entrance to the district is dominated by a Chinese-style gate which today is one of the last remnants of Chinese culture in Cuba. Nowadays there are only isolated restaurants and Chinese shops in the Barrio China. The gate, on the other hand, is still a real attention-grabber, right in the middle of Havana’s Cuban flair, with a width of 19 metres and featuring colourful Chinese roofs. USA: CenturyLink Field in Seattle
A special kind of ‘goal’ – and with guaranteed goal cheering – can be found above the Seattle football stadium. The resident Seattle Seahawks from the National Football League (NFL) last won the NFL Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos in 2014. The stadium holds 67,000 spectators, has artificial turf and is located in the centre of the city of Seattle. The 99th NFL season is scheduled to start on 6 September 2018 and once again promises exciting matches at CenturyLink Field under the stadium’s two enormous arches. Fans and all those who may yet become fans can obtain tickets for a Seahawks game on all the popular ticket portals.
