A computer glitch in a pilots trip trade system allowed all American Airlines pilots to take vacation over Christmas week, most of the pilots could take advantage of the system before someone could turn off the system. Local media in the U.S. is reporting that around 15,000 AA flights have actually “no pilot” between 17 December and 31 December, and the pilot union fears that “thousands of flights might be cancelled“.

Now with a massive of “open flights” dumped into the system, American Airlines is doing everything possible to find enough pilots to cover for all of the flights during Christmas week by offering the pilots a 150% pay rise for the “open flights”.

The airline commented on the computer glitch by saying: “We know that flying to be with family is a big part of holiday travel and we fully expect to avoid cancellations.
