AEA welcomes long-waited One Stop Security agreement with Canada

The Association of European Airlines (AEA) welcomes today’s announcement by the European Commission on the conclusion of a One Stop Security agreement with Canada.

From 1st March 2016 onwards, all passengers screened in Canada and transferring in the EU will not have to be re-screened at European airports, provided that these airports have the necessary infrastructure in place.  “The agreement represents a significant achievement in the field of European aviation security and will bring benefits for both passengers and airlines. One Stop Security will smooth the airport experience as it does away with unnecessary hassle and costs. It will also further improve minimum connecting times between flights”, says AEA’s CEO Athar Husain Khan.

This risk-based security concept will bring huge benefits for the European aviation industry. The highest level of security will be maintained, the passenger experience at European airports will improve and redundant screening measures can be eliminated. According to estimates, One Stop Security will save the European airline industry at least 15 million Euros per year.

The Association of European Airlines and its members worked closely with the Commission during this process. AEA’s CEO Athar Husain Khan said:  “AEA has been pushing for this agreement for more than three years. One Stop is a smart and efficient way of handling security and we thank the European regulators and decision makers for taking this step towards improving the competitiveness of the European aviation industry. AEA now calls on European airports to implement the measures necessary to make the One Stop Security concept with Canada possible. We also hope that very soon EU passengers flying to Canada can benefit from a similar One Stop Security procedure for connecting flights from Canadian airports.”

AEA will call for more such agreements with like-minded countries in the course of 2016.
