Finnair firms up orders for eight additional A350 aircraft

0

Finnair has firmed up the eight Airbus A350 XWB aircraft options in its 2006 A350 order placed with Airbus. The eight A350s will be delivered to Finnair starting in 2018. At Airbus list prices, the value of the additional eight A350 aircraft would be approximately 1.9 billion euro. The firm up of the options increases the total number of Finnair’s A350 orders to 19.

B361ov1CcAA2S5K

Finnair’s current long haul fleet consists of seven A340 aircraft and eight A330 aircraft. The long haul fleet is planned to grow, on average, by one new-generation energy-efficient aircraft per year between 2016 and 2020. Based on the current delivery schedule of A350s Finnair will receive the first four aircraft in the second half of 2015, seven A350s between 2016 and 2017, and eight A350s between 2018 and 2023. Finnair plans to phase out its A340 aircraft by the end of 2017, following the successful delivery and entry into service of A350 XWB. As a part of the deal Airbus has also agreed to acquire four A340-300 aircraft currently owned by Finnair in 2016 and 2017.

“Our strategy centers on growth, taking advantage of the unique geographical location of our Helsinki Hub, which offers the fastest connections between Europe and Asia. The A350 XWB aircraft will be essential in delivering on our strategy, as they enable growth in both passenger and cargo traffic, offer our customers top class travel experience and considerably enhance our cost competitiveness. Firming up the order for additional eight Airbus A350 XWB aircraft demonstrates our commitment to growth and to operating a world class Airbus fleet“, says Pekka Vauramo, Finnair CEO. “Together with Airbus and our other partners we are preparing to make the A350 entry into service a success. Our agreement with Airbus ensures a smooth transition from A340s to A350s, mitigating potential business continuity risks related to fleet renewals. ”

‘’We share a long-standing relationship with Finnair and are delighted by this renewed confidence in our Widebody family. The A350 will integrate very well into Finnair’s all Airbus fleet. Finnair will benefit from latest technologies and efficiency levels, enhanced by the unique fleet commonality only Airbus offers,’’ says John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers.

The transactions announced today are a part of Finnair’s long haul renewal program. Within this program, Finnair has already announced sale and leaseback agreements for four A330 aircraft (closed in the first half of 2014), the sale and leaseback agreement of the first two A350 aircraft (expected to close upon delivery of these aircraft to Finnair in the second half of 2015). As a whole, the combined impact of the A340 transaction announced today and the aforementioned sale and leaseback agreements is not significant to Finnair’s operating profit in 2014 and 2015, when gains and losses for selling these aircraft, the related relevant operating costs as well as transaction costs are taken into account.

Finnair is evaluating various financing options for the remaining A350 deliveries and will communicate more on that in due time.

Road-map to multi-million pound sustainable aviation fuels industry launched

0

Sustainable Aviation (SA), a coalition of the UK’s airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service provider NATS, has launched its latest Road-Map, which considers the opportunities for sustainable aviation fuels. The Road-Map identifies the potential for a 24 per cent reduction in aviation carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and the generation of £265 million in economic value plus the creation of 4400 jobs in the UK over the next 15 years. However, Government support will be vital to achieve this potential. This ground-breaking document identifies and forecasts the potential volumes of sustainable aviation fuel to 2050, both for the UK and globally. It highlights the possible contribution such fuels can make to supporting the decarbonisation of the UK economy, the opportunities for job creation and economic growth as well as the viability of the market for producers, refiners and investors. SA hopes to build on the successful work promoting innovation that Government has already undertaken with industry, in order to develop a shared vision that focuses on investing in the commercialisation of high value sustainable aviation fuels. The Road-Map:

Sustainable Aviation (SA), a coalition of the UK’s airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service provider NATS, has launched its latest Road-Map, which considers the opportunities for sustainable aviation fuels.

  • Forecasts that by 2030 there could be 90-160 operational sustainable fuel plants globally with revenue estimated at £8-17 billion – with up to 12 plants in the UK.
  • Defines an opportunity to develop a domestic industry for sustainable aviation fuels generating up to £265 million in economic value, and supporting up to 4,400 jobs.
  • Identifies that with the right policy and investment framework, UK aviation can reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 24% by 2050 through the deployment of sustainable alternative fuels.
  • Reviews the current, new and emerging sustainable fuels market.
  • Recommends the establishment of a public-private initiative to help realise these opportunities, similar to the USA’s Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuel Initiative (CAAFI).

Jonathon Counsell, Chair of Sustainable Aviation, said:  “The UK aviation industry is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and this Road- Map not only demonstrates an additional way for us to do so but also identifies a new industry that could supply thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions pounds to our economy. “Sustainable aviation fuels have the potential to play an important role in achieving the UK’s ambition to reduce carbon emissions from transport, contributing to EU 2030 climate change policy goals and the global aviation target to halve net carbon emissions by 2050. “The UK should seize on its leadership in global aerospace and aviation and maintain this country’s competitive advantage to boost investment in science, deliver increased jobs for the UK and produce significant emissions reductions. “The UK aviation sector is unique in its commitment to working together to develop sustainable, low carbon, fuels that will help deliver on its climate change commitments.  From recycling waste materials and gases into jet fuel, to the early stage development of algal oils for transportation fuels, the potential for the UK to become a centre of excellence for sustainable fuels is considerable.  We look forward to working closely with Government to ensure policies are consistent across transport modes that will drive the necessary investment.”

Boeing – Ryanair Finalize Order for 100 737 MAX 200s

1

Irish low-cost carrier is launch customer for 737 MAX 200

737 MAX 200 to deliver up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency

“Ryanair is proud and honored to become the lead operator of Boeing’s ‘gamechanger’ 737 MAX 200 aircraft, which will expand our fleet to approximately 520 aircraft by 2024 and create another 10,000 new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers in Europe, while allowing us to grow traffic from 82 million passengers last year to over 150 million by 2024,” said Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary.

“These new ‘gamechanger’ aircraft will allow Ryanair to lower our costs and airfares, while improving our customer experience with more leg room and the Boeing Sky Interior, as we roll out new offers, particularly for our Business Plus and Family Extra customers. As many of Europe’s flag carriers cut capacity on short-haul routes, Ryanair looks forward to using these new 737 MAX 200 aircraft to grow at many more of Europe’s primary airports,” said O’Leary.

The 737 MAX 200, a variant based on the successful 737 MAX 8, can accommodate up to 200 seats, increasing revenue potential and providing customers up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency per seat than today’s most efficient single-aisle airplanes.

“The 737 MAX 200 will be an excellent addition to Ryanair’s all-Boeing fleet, providing the additional capacity, improved economics and high-levels of reliability that are required for its continued expansion,” said Todd Nelp, vice president of European Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our long-term partnership with Ryanair is a source of immense pride within Boeing and we are delighted to have the airline as the launch customer for the 737 MAX 200.”

Boeing developed the 737 MAX 200 in response to the needs of the fast growing low-cost sector, which is forecasted to account for 35 percent of single-aisle airline capacity by 2033. While the heart of the single-aisle market will remain at 160 seats, the 737 MAX 200 will provide carriers like Ryanair with up to 11 more seats of potential revenue and up to 5 percent lower operating costs than the 737 MAX 8, driving economic growth and increasing access to air travel.

Standard across the 737 MAX family, Ryanair’s 737 MAX 200s will be configured with the passenger inspired Boeing Sky Interior, featuring modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting that enhances the sense of spaciousness and larger pivoting overhead stowage bins.

The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. With this order, more than 50 customers have ordered more than 2,550 737 MAXs.

Headquartered in Ireland’s capital city, Ryanair operates more than 1,600 flights daily from 71 bases, connecting 183 destinations in 30 countries. Currently operating 300 Next-Generation 737-800s, Ryanair took delivery of its first 737 in 1994, and now operates the largest fleet of Boeing airplanes in Europe. With a team of more than 9,700 highly skilled professionals, the airline is expected to fly more than 89 million passengers this year.

Brussels Airlines prepares for Belgian strike days

The airline does its utmost to limit the inconveniences for its passengers and to get them to their destination as smoothly as possible. That’s why Brussels Airlines has decided to already adapt its flight schedules of 8 and 15 December now, so that passengers can choose alternative flight options.

The national trade unions in Belgium have called for a general strike across various industries on 8 and 15 December. Brussels Airlines does its utmost to operate its flight schedule, but must anticipate the impact the national actions may have, as the strike days are very busy days for the airline, with a total of 22,000 and 21,400 passengers booked on flights on 8 and 15 December respectively.

In order to minimize the inconveniences for its passengers, Brussels Airlines has decided to adapt its European flight program on 8 and 15 December. Passengers will be offered alternative travel options or they can choose to request a refund in case their flight is cancelled.  More information about the adapted flight schedules.

Since 21 November Brussels Airlines offers all passengers booked on flights on 8 and 15 December, the possibility to rebook their flight pro-actively, if they don’t wish to fly anymore on these dates, regardless of whether their flight is cancelled.

On 8 and 15 December, the airline will do its utmost to assist her passengers as much as possible. The airline strongly advises to travel with hand luggage only, if possible, since baggage handling activities might be impacted as well.

“We want to assist our guests as much as possible, in line with our daily pursuit of personal service. That’s why we adapt our flight schedule in advance, so passengers can be informed in time and are offered alternatives, so they can organize themselves. We truly regret the inconveniences these social actions will cause for our guests.”

Azul Brazilian Airlines orders 35 Airbus A320neo

0

Azul Brazilian Airlines has signed a purchase agreement for 35 A320neo Family aircraft

The airline, which is also leasing another 28 A320neo aircraft, has chosen the A320neo Family to carry out domestic long haul flights and high density routes, including Campinas – Salvador and Campinas – Recife. For Azul, an important driver for selecting the A320neo was the aircraft’s low operating costs and excellent fuel efficiency. Azul Brazilian Airlines has selected CFM engines for their A320neo fleet.

“Azul is an airline that truly serves all of Brazil. With more than 100 destinations , Azul will soon offer even more seats on our longer haul flights, allowing us to reduce operating costs,” said David Neeleman, CEO and Founder of Azul. “In addition to its market leading economics, which will allow Azul to stimulate new demand, the A320neo is also a perfect complement to our E-Jet fleet, giving us additional seats and capacity that can be dedicated to strategic projects like TudoAzul, Azul Viagens and Azul Cargo.”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

“Airbus welcomes Azul to the A320 Family and is proud that they will rely on the A320neo’s unbeatable productivity and fuel efficiency to expand their services,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We are pleased that Azul recognizes Airbus’ commitment to Brazil and the importance of operating the high performance A320neo in key airports such as Santos Dumont in Rio. This order truly underscores the leading position of the A320neo in the single aisle market.”

In April, Azul announced that it would start operating long haul flights by early December. The airline expects to fly new international routes with a fleet of 12 leased wide body Airbus aircraft, including seven Airbus A330-200 and later five Airbus A350-900 equipped with Rolls-Royce engines.

Airbus has obtained regulatory approval for training of A350 XWB airline pilots in accordance with the original goal of an A330/A350 “Common Type Rating” (CTR). This will enable Azul pilots to benefit from reduced training time in the transition from one Airbus jetliner model to another, resulting in significant benefits for airline profitability, pilot productivity and scheduling flexibility.?

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with almost 11,000 orders to date and over 6,200 aircraft delivered to 400 customers and operators worldwide. Thanks to its widest cabin, all members of the A320 Family offer the industry’s best level of comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18” wide seats in economy as standard. The newest member of the A320 Family, the A320neo, incorporates new generation engines and Sharklets (wing tip devices) which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings. Firm orders for the NEO reached over 3,200 aircraft from 60 customers, representing a 60 percent market share in its category.

The Airbus A350 XWB makes a big impression during its Asian demonstration tour

0

The latest member of Airbus’ market-leading widebody product line: the A350 XWB jetliner.

The latest member of Airbus’ market-leading widebody product line – the A350 XWB jetliner – took centre stage in the fast-growing Asian market during its successful 11-day demonstration tour, which was performed ahead of the first customer delivery, planned before year-end.

Using its MSN005 a350-900 developmental aircraft, Airbus debuted the A350 XWB – already a world traveler as a result of its certification and global route-proving campaigns – in five new Asian destinations: Seoul, Tokyo, Hanoi, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, before it arrived back in Toulouse, France today.

Throughout this trip, Airbus underscored the highly-efficient widebody jetliner’s superior operating economics and high levels of passenger comfort, which was highlighted during the visits of key customers, invited airline guests, industry officials, journalists and bloggers.

More than 4,000 people came aboard the aircraft during its Asian stopovers, with 375 of them given the A350 XWB experience during demonstration flights.

Featuring the latest in aerodynamic design, advanced materials – including an airframe comprised of 53 percent composites – and fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350 XWB offers a 25 percent reduction in fuel burn, as well as lower emissions and maintenance costs for operators.

Visitors to MSN005 also were able to experience first-hand the A350 XWB’s “xtra” wide cabin, which provides more personal space in all classes – including Airbus’ modern comfort standard of at least 18-inch-wide seats in economy, the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems, wide panoramic windows, large overhead stowage compartments and precise temperature control.

Even before its commercial service entry, the A350 XWB already is a star in the Asia-Pacific market, with approximately one-third of its 750 total orders coming from operators in this region – placed by such world-class carriers as AirAsia X, Air China, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, Thai Airways International and Vietnam Airlines.

The first A350-900 version is scheduled to be delivered to global launch customer Qatar Airways before the end of 2014, with the initial aircraft for Vietnam Airlines – which will become the second A350 XWB operator, and first in Asia – now in final assembly in preparation for a planned mid-2015 handover.

Prime Minister Cameron attends acceptance ceremony at RAF Brize Norton.

Airbus Defence and Space has delivered the first Airbus A400M new generation airlifter to the Royal Air Force, beginning the next stage of the transformation of the United Kingdom´s air mobility fleet.

The aircraft is the first of 22 ordered by the UK and will be known in service as the A400M Atlas.

Prime Minister David Cameron was today guest of honour at a ceremony to celebrate the acceptance of the aircraft at RAF Brize Norton, which is in his parliamentary constituency, where the entire Atlas fleet will be based. He was accompanied by Minister for Defence Equipment Support &Technology Philip Dunne.

Executive Vice President Military Aircraft, Domingo Ureña Raso, said: “It is an enormous pleasure to see the A400M entering service with the RAF which is one of the leading exponents of military air mobility worldwide. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all our employees, especially those in the UK, as well as OCCAR and our UK customer for making this day possible.

“Airbus Defence and Space is today privileged to be the biggest provider of large aircraft to the RAF and we are absolutely committed to executing that responsibility to the very best of our abilities for many years to come.”

The A400M will replace the C-130 in RAF service but, because it can carry approximately twice as much load, or the same load twice as far, fewer aircraft will be required.

Uniquely it is able both to cruise at jet-like speeds and altitudes over intercontinental ranges due to its extremely powerful engines and advanced aerodynamic design, as well as to operate repeatedly from short and unprepared airstrips close to the scene of military action or humanitarian crisis.

At Brize Norton the A400M will operate alongside the RAF’s Airbus Voyager multi-role tanker transport fleet. The wings of both aircraft are built in the UK at Filton and Broughton respectively. Additionally the Voyager’s engines are produced in the UK by Rolls-Royce, which is also a member of the Europrop International consortium that produces the A400M’s TP400 engines.

Altogether the A400M supports some 8,000 jobs in the UK including around 900 Airbus Group employees working directly on the aircraft at Filton. To date eight nations have ordered 174 aircraft of which the first seven have now been delivered.

Ryanair launches electronic flight bags on all flights

0

Ryanair today (27 Nov) launched Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) for all pilots, across its entire fleet of 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which will see Ryanair pilots using iPads in place of traditional flight manuals.

As part of its “Always Getting Better” programme, Ryanair pilots now have full electronic use of Boeing’s Onboard Performance Tool (OPT), which includes take-off performance calculations, as well as instant access to the most up to date electronic flight manuals, which will further improve time management and productivity, reducing dependency on paper products.

These two applications are the first in a suite of products that Ryanair is preparing to roll out over the coming months, including electronic charts and load sheets, subject to testing and approval from the Irish Aviation Authority.

Over the coming months, Ryanair plans to remove paper from the flight deck, eliminating 15kgs of manuals from each cockpit, and with Ryanair operating over 550,000 flights annually, creating fuel savings, while also eliminating more than 10 million pages of paper documentation, reaffirming Ryanair’s position as Europe’s greenest and cleanest airline.

Ryanair’s Group Director of Operations, Michael Hickey said:

“With a rapidly growing operation across 71 European bases, the logistical challenges of delivering information to crew are instantly simplified with the introduction of the iPad as an Electronic Flight Bag. This is yet another display of Ryanair’s commitment to improving our already outstanding operational performance.

Ryanair recognises the value of this cutting edge technology as a powerful and flexible solution. Our progression towards a paperless flight deck has efficiency benefits recognised across the industry. A paperless cockpit is an efficient cockpit.”
