Lufthansa to continue as official partner of German Football Association for another four years

0

Partnership is extended until 2018 World Cup in Russia

As the “airline for sport”, Lufthansa is continuing its involvement in football and has extended its partnership with the German Football Association (DFB) until 2018. Lufthansa will thus remain an official partner of the German Football Association. The corresponding agreement was signed in Frankfurt today by Wolfgang Niersbach, President of the DFB, and Jens Bischof, member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board responsible for Sales, Product and Marketing.

Image

As the official carrier, Lufthansa flies the players, trainers, staff and delegation members of the DFB-team to all of their international matches and tournaments. The national soccer team will travel with Lufthansa to France for the 2016 European Championship and to Russia for the 2018 World Cup – as well as the women’s soccer team for the World Cup in Canada next year.

The agreement guarantees Lufthansa extensive rights and marketing benefits from the DFB, such as the inclusion of logos on all DFB communication material, as well as content for the airline’s social media platforms. Lufthansa and the DFB are also planning joint initiatives with representatives and fans of the DFB.

A particular highlight of the previous agreement period was the national team’s flight to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the return flight with the Lufthansa Siegerflieger (winner’s plane) straight to the World Cup party in Berlin.

“Lufthansa is, and will remain, a reliable partner for sport. Our partnership with the German Football Association is an especially important one for us. Lufthansa is already looking forward to bringing the team back to Germany after the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup in Russia – hopefully as winners again in both cases,” said Jens Bischof at the signing of the agreement.

Wolfgang Niersbach, President of the DFB, added: “From the international matches played by our national first team, to the tournaments in which our national youth teams participate and the international deployments of our foreign experts, the DFB is active all over the world. In Lufthansa, we are delighted to have a reliable partner at our side, who knows what we require, is flexible and who identifies with German football. The picture of the “Siegerflieger” winner’s plane over the fan park at the return from Brazil of our World Champions was a lovely example of this partnership.”

Lufthansa has had long-standing partnerships with the German Football Association (since 2005), FC Bayern Munich (since 2004) and Eintracht Frankfurt (since 2008). The airline is also a national sponsor of the Deutsche Sporthilfe foundation and has been a partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for many years. This has traditionally involved transporting the German teams to the Olympics and, as a partner of the National Paralympic Committee Germany (DBS), to the Paralympics.

Upgrade above the clouds: Austrian Airlines equips pilots with tablets

0

• Modernization boost in the cockpits of Austrian Airlines – Austria’s largest airline has used the Surface Pro 3 in flight operations since early November.
• Surface tablets are replacing the paper-based version of the electronic flight bag (EFB) – a collection of important flight documents weighing several kilograms that until now has accompanied pilots around the world.
• Fully rolled out, some 950 Windows 8.1-based Surface Pro 3 tablets simplify the work of pilots enormously. What is more, thanks to the completely paperless cockpit they make sure that the processes surrounding flight operations are more efficient, that time is saved, and that punctuality is improved.

Modernization boost in the cockpit
Austrian Airlines is currently putting into effect a project that will change the work of pilots in the cockpit dramatically and put flight operations on an entirely new footing. Equipping every pilot with a Surface Pro 3 tablet sees Austria’s largest airline boosting modernization and productivity enormously.

“When it comes to improving flight operations and providing customers with an even better quality of service, an ever increasing number of airlines rely on innovations from Microsoft. We are very proud of the fact that the biggest carrier in Austria, Austrian Airlines, opted to use Surface Pro 3 and Windows 8.1 to modernize its operations. Prevailing as a fully-fledged tablet and work instrument in one, the Surface’s positioning on the market is also underscored by this move – regardless of whether it is on the ground or above the clouds,” says Alexander Linhart, head of the Windows Business Group at Microsoft Austria.

The dream of a paperless cockpit
“Starting in the late 1990s with the arrival of the first laptops in the flight deck, the dream of a completely paperless cockpit is now actually becoming a reality thanks to the Surface tablets from Microsoft,” explains Dr. Philipp Haller, pilot at Austrian Airlines. As electronic flight bag administrator, Philipp Haller is also head of the current project and recounts: “In 1999, AUA was the first airline in Europe to place flight documentation at the disposal of its pilots in digital form – effectively as a forerunner of the modern electronic flight bags of today. Due to the numerous advantages that arise from the intensified use of digital instead of paper-based flight bags, we have developed flight operations over the last few years continuously. Having said that, it was not possible to replace the flight bag completely in the past. Thanks to the Surface tablet-based electronic flight bags, that is now different.”

Upgrade for pilots
The advantages of the electronic flight bag are perfectly obvious to Philipp Haller, who as a Boeing 777 pilot also works on long-haul routes: “We are now in a position to use the tablets as a ‘real’ electronic flight bag for the first time in flight operations. Unlike previous solutions, the tablet will therefore accompany the pilot constantly.” This starts with preparations – pilots use an existing Internet connection to load the latest flight information and documents (flight plans, weather information, as well as position, environmental, and system data, for example) onto the tablet. They then take it into the cockpit, where – for safety reasons – at least two Surface Pro 3 tablets per flight are fixed using special brackets. “Fixing them in this manner means that our pilots are now in a position to use the electronic flight bag installed on the tablet in all phases of the flight for the first time. In particular, that now applies to critical phases such as the takeoff, when landing, and in the event of turbulence, too.”

Upgrading the entire fleet
Austrian Airlines has opted for the implementation of an extensive Surface Pro 3 and Windows 8.1-based electronic flight bag. The high performance, the large screen, and the – in comparison – very low weight make the tablet from Microsoft an ideal work instrument for the flight crew. In the course of the project, Austrian has bought about 950 Surface Pro 3 tablets in total. The version chosen features 128 GB storage, an Intel i5 processor, and 4 GB RAM. The rollout of the Austrian fleet’s tablets and equipment started early November 2014. To achieve this, the cockpit of every Airbus A320, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, Dash 8 Q400, and Fokker aircraft will be gradually fitted with EFB brackets, meaning that every pilot – irrespective of the type of aircraft they fly – can use the Surface tablets and electronic flight bag installed on them at all times during flight operations in the future. Introduction of the new system is supported by Microsoft partners ACP and Danube IT Services.

Simplifying the work of pilots
“Pilots work for 95% of their time offline. Following the switchover to the electronic flight bag, the flight crew always has all the information relevant to the flight available offline,” explains Philipp Haller. “The electronic flight bag on the Microsoft tablet allows us to synchronize a wide range of the latest data, information, and flight-related documentation prior to the flight, meaning it is then available offline at any time during the flight. The immediate availability of manuals, charts or checklists consisting of several thousand pages widens the ability to take action in the air enormously,” Philipp Haller summarizes the advantages from the perspective of a pilot.

Tradition in the air
Nonetheless, an element of tradition will remain in the future: “Despite every desire, freedom above the clouds is not completely limitless,” says the pilot, who has been flying for Austrian Airlines for more than 16 years. For even if the content of the previous paper-based flight bag is replaced by a tablet, this ultimately needs to be transported somehow, too. Philipp Haller believes there are also other reasons why flight bags will not disappear entirely from cockpits around the world: “The flight bag will continue to be very popular as a baggage item – for personal travel accessories, at least. And despite all else, there is one thing we must not forget: even if everything in the cockpit is now digital, the pilot license will continue to accompany pilots in paper form for some time.“

Fraport Traffic Figures – October 2014

0

In the reporting month of October 2014, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) reported ongoing traffic growth. Despite some 1,100 strike-related flight cancellations which affected about 137,500 passengers, passenger numbers at FRA rose by 1.4 percent to 5.5 million. Without the strike by the pilots’ union, Frankfurt Airport would have seen underlying passenger growth of approximately four percent in October 2014.

FRA’s cargo throughput (airfreight + airmail) increased by 1.1 percent to 188,062 metric tons year-on-year. Accumulated MTOWs (maximum takeoff weights) also rose, climbing by 1.6 percent to about 2.6 million metric tons. Aircraft movements declined by 1.5 percent to 41,947 takeoffs and landings. Without the strike-related flight cancellations, the number of aircraft movements at FRA would have slightly exceeded the previous year’s level.

Airports in the Fraport Group’s international portfolio also reported growth in October 2014. Fully consolidated for the first time, newly acquired Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in the capital city of Slovenia served 117,491 passengers and achieved growth of 6.7 percent compared to the same month last year. In Peru, Lima Airport (LIM) welcomed almost 1.4 million passengers, up 4.5 percent year-on-year. Bulgaria’s Twinstar airports of Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) had a combined total of 78,078 passengers – representing growth of 2.6 percent. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera experienced a 4.8 percent drop in traffic to about 2.8 million passengers. With more than 1.1 million passengers, St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport (LED) in Russia saw traffic rise by 5.6 percent year-on-year. In Germany, Hanover Airport (HAJ) also grew by 5.6 percent to 571,082 passengers. Xi’an Airport (XIY) in China achieved double-digit growth of 13.7 percent with some 2.7 million passengers.

Finnair and Flybe have entered into a conditional share sale agreement of Flybe Nordic – flights will continue normally

0

Flybe and Finnair have agreed to restructure the ownership of their jointly owned Flybe Nordic venture, and Flybe has agreed to sell the shares that it holds in Flybe Nordic to a potential new majority shareholder or to Finnair for the price of one euro. The sale of the shares is conditional only upon approval being received from the competition authorities.

Flybe Nordic owns fully the Finnish subsidiary Flybe Finland, which is in charge of Finnair’s regional airline operations. Consequently, Finnair is now mapping alternatives to continue Flybe Finland’s regional flying with a cost-effective business model and new ownership structure for Flybe Nordic. These alternatives include a potential new majority shareholder for Flybe Nordic.

Finnair and Flybe began their cooperation in 2011 when they founded the Flybe Nordic joint venture, of which Flybe owns 60 per cent and Finnair 40 per cent.

Finnair_Embraer_ERJ-170-100LR_170LR_Pesonen

The companies have already for some time discussed the restructuring and cost saving strategy for Flybe Finland. The companies have not been able to arrive at a common understanding to resolve profitability issues. Flybe and Finnair accordingly have signed an agreement under which it is intended that Flybe will exit Flybe Nordic by the end of 2014, subject to approval being received from competition authorities.

The operations and flights of Flybe Finland will continue normally.

“The financial performance of our joint venture has not developed according to the expectations of its shareholders. We haven’t been able to arrive at a common view to resolve the profitability issues, and therefore the companies have agreed to discontinue the cooperation. Finnair aims to find a new majority shareholder and a business model that would enable the development of regional flying in a financially sustainable way,” says Pekka Vauramo, Finnair CEO.

Flybe Finland currently operates to a number of domestic and European destinations from Helsinki on behalf of Finnair on a contract-flying basis. In addition, Flybe Finland operates to five domestic destinations as well as Tartu, Estonia and Norrköping, Sweden at its own commercial risk.

Flybe Finland started operating code share flights in August 2011 with ATR 72 aircraft and two Embraer 170s. On 28 October 2012, the cooperation was expanded to cover European flights with Embraer 190 aircraft as contracted flying, after which Flybe Finland has operated a third of Finnair’s European traffic.

Finnair’s balance sheet includes a 9.9 million euro subordinated loan issued to Flybe Finland in 2011. Finnair has written down the value of its Flybe Nordic AB shares following the realized losses of Flybe Finland.

Finnair also has advance payment and other operational receivables from Flybe Finland. Due to Flybe Finland’s ownership change and the need to restructure its operations, it is possible that a part of these receivables cannot be collected. Finnair is also considering giving working capital financing to Flybe Finland. Finnair estimates that the resulting financial impacts will not exceed -20 million euros. The exact overall impact will be communicated when the ownership structure is defined.

Traffic results for January-October 2014: Austrian Airlines Increases Passenger Volume on Intercontinental Routes

0

• About 9.7 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines
• Total passenger volume at the prior-year level despite weak demand for Russia, Ukraine and the crisis regions in the Middle East
• 8.6% passenger growth on long-haul flights

A total of 9.7 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in the period from January to October 2014, corresponding to the same level as in the first nine months of the previous year. Passenger growth of 8.6 percent could be achieved on intercontinental flights, in contrast to flight traffic on the European continent. The political crises in the Ukraine and the Middle East led to short-term flight cancellations and flight service reductions. Overall capacity was expanded by 4.5 percent on the basis of an additional Boeing 777 and the expansion to North America. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 5.4 percent in the first ten months. As a result, capacity utilization (passenger load factor) in this period rose by 0.7 percentage points to 79.7 percent.

“The crisis regions in the Middle East, Russia and the Ukraine continue to dampen demand. However, growth on long-haul routes could compensate for the restrained demand in Europe. As a consequence, passenger volume could be maintained at the same level as in the previous year”, says Austrian Airlines CEO Jaan Albrecht.

In the month of October 2014 alone, more than 993,000 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines. The 4.6 percent decline in a year-on-year comparison is mainly attributable to the crisis regions of Russia, the Ukraine and the Middle East. On balance, capacity was increased by 3.4 percent, and revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 1.1 percent. Accordingly, capacity utilization (passenger load factor) fell by 1.8 percentage points to 78.2 percent.

Europe
In October 2014, Austrian Airlines carried about 831,200 passengers in Europe, a decrease of 6.4 percent from the previous year. This development is primarily due to weak demand for flights to Russia and the Ukraine. The passenger load factor fell by 2.6 percentage points to 75.2 percent.

In the period January to October 2014, about 8.2 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in Europe, corresponding to a slight drop of 1.4 percent below the comparable period of 2013. The passenger load factor was down by 0.3 percentage points to 77.2 percent.

Intercontinental
In October 2014, Austrian Airlines carried a total of approximately 161,800 passengers on its intercontinental flights or 6.4 percent more passengers than in October of 2013. The passenger load factor fell by 1.5 percent points to 80.5 percent.

In the period of January to October 2014, about 1.5 million passengers were carried on intercontinental flights of Austrian Airlines. This represents a rise in passenger volume of 8.6 percent year-on-year. The passenger load factor was up by 1.4 percentage points to 81.9 percent.

TNT starts services from Hanover

0

TNT is stepping up its services in Europe with the start of air services to Hanover (Germany).

TNT is expanding service to Germany, Europe’s largest express delivery market. TNT now offers five weekly flights connecting Hanover to the company’s main international air hub in Liege (Belgium), Hanover to Billund (Denmark) and Oslo (Norway) to Hanover. All the flights are operated with a Boeing 737-400 freighter.

Hanover is a convenient gateway to northern Germany, including the towns of Hamburg, Bremen and Magdeburg. The daily overnight flight from Liege to Hanover Langenhagen Airport enables delivery of urgent shipments to the region before 9:00 a.m. After reloading, the flight continues to Denmark. The flight from Hanover to Liege, which originates from Oslo, departs Hanover every night, allowing for late collections in northern Germany and next-day delivery all over Europe. These services will particularly benefit automotive and industrial companies that rely on time-critical exports and imports.

TNT has been active in Hanover for many years. In 2012, the company moved its local offices and road transit hub to a large building on the airport grounds to ensure smoother connections between air and road operations. By operating its own flights to Hanover Langenhagen Airport, Lower Saxony’s largest airport, TNT now gives customers even more control over their shipments.

KLM and Fans Bid Final Farewell to the MD-11

0

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will today join 800 fans in bidding a final farewell to the MD-11. KLM operated ten MD-11s between 1993 and today.

With three special Farewell Flights over the Netherlands, those in attendance will have one last chance to enjoy their favourite aircraft. Tickets for these flights sold out within minutes. This last MD-11 flight also marks the end of a remarkable era in civil aviation. KLM is the last airline in the world to deploy the MD-11 for passenger traffic. The partnership between Douglas and KLM lasted more than 80 years, which is unique.

Image

Since 1934, KLM is the only airline in the world to have operated every series-built aircraft type manufactured by Douglas, from DC2 to DC10. It all began in 1934 with KLM’s first DC-2, which remained in service until 1946. The legendary PH-AJU “Uiver” (Stork), which won the handicap section of the London to Melbourne race in 1934, was a DC-2. The DC-3 Dakota will be on show on the apron during the farewell event at Schiphol. KLM is the only airline to have operated the DC-5, because it was the only airline that did not cancel its order for this aircraft during the Second World War.

Today, KLM bids a fond farewell to this legendary aircraft and has the honour, as a loyal customer, of marking the end of the Douglas era. Over the last few years, KLM has invested in a modern, fuel-efficient and sustainable fleet, for which the MD-11 is no longer suited. The MD-11 will be succeeded by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in 2015. The Boeing Dreamliner can carry 294 passengers, generates fuel savings of around 30%, and produces less noise and CO2 emissions. This is how KLM is contributing to a more sustainable airline industry. The Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 will deployed instead of the MD-11 until the new aircraft are delivered.

Largest single 737 MAX order from a leasing company

0

Boeing (NYSE: BA) and SMBC Aviation Capital announced an order for 80 737 MAX 8s, valued at more than $8.5 billion at list prices. This is the largest single order for 737 MAXs from a leasing company and will help SMBC Aviation Capital grow its portfolio of high-demand, fuel-efficient airplanes.

With this agreement SMBC Aviation Capital becomes the 50th 737 MAX customer and grows the program’s order book to more than 2,400 airplanes.

SMBC Aviation Capital 737 MAX 8 Artwork

“It is 10 years since our business placed its first order with Boeing and we have enjoyed a decade of successful partnership since then,” said Peter Barrett, CEO, SMBC Aviation Capital. “The 737 MAX 8 is one of the most fuel efficient and versatile aircraft available and today’s announcement shows our ongoing commitment to the new generation of the popular 737 family, as well as our appetite to keep broadening and deepening our platform in order to service our customers’ requirements. Following this order and given the clear commitment of our shareholders and the strength of the global aircraft leasing sector, we remain very confident in our ability to continue to deliver long-term growth.”

SMBC Aviation Capital and Boeing celebrated the announcement earlier today at a signing ceremony in Tokyo.

“This order is another example of our history of partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital and Japan,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. “Today’s announcement from a top leasing company is a vote of confidence in our 737 MAX and helps SMBC Aviation Capital capture the strong demand in the single-aisle market.”

Boeing’s Current Market Outlook forecasts that airlines will need more than 25,600 single-aisle airplanes like the 737 MAX over the next 20 years.

The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX will be 14 percent more fuel-efficient than today’s most efficient Next-Generation 737s – and 20 percent better than the original Next-Generation 737s when they first entered service.

Boeing has been doing business in Japan for more than 60 years, during which time it has built close and enduring partnerships with Japanese customers and industry partners. Japanese customers have purchased over 1,000 Boeing airplanes and Japan’s aerospace companies make a significant contribution to all Boeing commercial airplane programs: the 737, 747-8, 777 and 787, and now the 737 MAX and 777X.

SMBC Aviation Capital has 180 Boeing airplanes in its portfolio and has 95 airline customers in more than 40 countries.

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has secured a new codeshare agreement, this time with Dublin-based Aer Lingus which, with immediate effect, builds further on its proposition to seamlessly connect its regional customers with ‘One Stop to the World’ connections.

The partnership with Aer Lingus now enables Flybe customers travelling from Exeter, Inverness, Southend and Southampton to access, via a single stop in Dublin, an even wider range of destinations across North America and Canada. Aer Lingus’ north Atlantic network includes 10 daily flights across the Atlantic to Boston, New York, San Francisco, Orlando, Chicago and Toronto. This codeshare agreement also extends to those travelling on Flybe franchise partner flights to the Irish Capital – namely those from Donegal with Loganair and Flybe’s joint operation from Southend with Stobart Air.

Customers will be able to make full use of this partnership through bookings via the Aer Lingus website or through local travel agents and with just one airline ticket can be assured of seamless onward flights through Dublin. There is the added benefit that Dublin Airport also provides US Customs pre-clearance meaning that passengers arrive in the United States as a ‘domestic passenger’ and so can proceed straight through to the arrivals hall at their eventual destination, by-passing lengthy US Customs and Immigration queues.

Today’s news builds upon Flybe’s current portfolio of five existing codeshare partnerships, namely those with Air France, British Airways, Etihad, Finnair and KLM, along with 17 interline partners that includes Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Air Portugal and Qatar Airways.

Paul Simmons, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:  “Our new codeshare agreement with Aer Lingus is another exciting development for Flybe and we are delighted to be working with such an excellent and well-respected airline.  It further demonstrates our commitment to providing seamless connectivity from the regions of the UK, which means passengers do not have to face long road or rail journeys to the UK’s south east hub airports.”

Stephen Kavanagh, Aer Lingus Chief Strategy and Planning Officer, added: “We are delighted to join forces with Flybe as a connecting codeshare partner. The combination of our services will give both airlines increased network reach and will help Aer Lingus to further develop our transatlantic hub at Dublin to the benefit of customers in the U.K and the U.S.“
