They looked at SN and thought, hey that blue tail is nice, let's adopt it but for our brand but leave behind the two tone fuselage, that's to expensive, it has to be cheaper :mrgreen:

Two toned, they are searching for high volume discounts and faster application times. Must be saving some 100K € when repainting the fleet.

I'm still hoping they released this image in order to get everybody to think it was leaked, and the real reveal will be something more inspired...

Not very controversial indeed, but then isn't that exactly the profile of Lufthansa?

One can't really say one loves this update, but one can not hate it either, because it's so minimalistic: all while, with their name on the fuselage and the legendary silver logo on a blue tail: it's the essence of their brand really.

Yellow is a Lufthansa accent colour indeed, but looking at their planes they do look 1980s, don't you agree?
Besides, I heart every colour adds costs, so them letting go of yellow and gray probably saves them a small fortune.

Personally, I'm a great fan of 'less is more' as design concepts and I would have gone further even, because I think Lufthansa probably is the only airline in Europe which could even let off their name itself on the planes, just like Nike did: their logo alone is enough to be recognised, but that would likely have been too controversial, although they have been experimenting with it on certain publications and in their lounges!

I've read somewhere they were going to change the style of the font as well, as in different looking titles.

Actually, No, I dont think it looks ‘80s. I thought it was rather timeless. Just a small yellow cheatline would have been enough to accentuate and make it less dull

It certainly looked the same for a long time, so in that sense, yes, it was 'timeless', but let's think it over: a corporate logo put up against a bright encircled background: isn't that pretty much thé design trend of the 1980s? ;)

Euh, you mean a stripe along the fuselage right?

As I've said: it would have left off even their name and taken the logo out of the circle, but they went for minimalistic, yet 100% safe, exactly as you could expect from them.

My personal take is there's really too much flag waving going on when it comes to aviation, IMHO: a TGV train doesn't come draped in the French flag, nor does a Mercedes car has its entire nose covered with their emblematic star, so I fail to see why an company selling air travel should somehow carry a huge flag of its country on its tail or use billboard titles to display its full name, especially when you have such an easily recognizable one as Lufthansa? A small logo on the tail and a discrete mentioning of their name is more than enough, I should think? Nike and Audi are 2 signature brands which often don't even bother to mention their name next to their logo any longer... It's a relaxing trend I much appreciate.

There is at least one other colour. The blue is not uniform, but a mixture of different shades (50 shades of blue?). Thus the cost argument is not valid.

But still, these shade are not so apparent at first sight, and the whole design looks cheap, boring and bland.

In my view the 'new' LH livery is a dull and boring one. If it would be a cost saving measure by leaving out the more lively yellow,why didn't they go for the all metal fuselage like in the past and only paint the tail? That would for sure save a lot more money.

That wouldn’t work with the new generation of aircraft, like the A350 and B787.
Also, I think a lot of people still relate bare metal fuselages to American Airlines, even though it has been quite a while since they changed their livery.

Cx (Cathay Pacific) used to have a full metal colour scheme. They ditched it because the white and other colours where weighing less than the blank varnish they needed to protect the metal from adverse conditions.

Why would the cost argument not be valid?
Regardless how many colours there are, one extra (yellow) means yet another spraying layer and thus more costs, IMHO.

But i can agree to one change: they could have used the warm and typical Lufthansa yellow iso blue as that is more of a house colour than blue, which is quite generic in fact, but anyway: this is a very safe scheme, so it will grow very quickly upon people.

Lufthansa Group concluded long-term labour agreement with Verdi for a new collective wage agreement. The company agreed to a 6% increase for 33 months, effective from 01 January to 30 September 2020.

Another target for Lufthansa? XL Airways France has reportedly received expressions of interest from British Airways, Lufthansa and Aigle Azur.
