Boeing ecoDemonstrator 787 Tests Innovations for More Efficient Air Travel

0
Testing digital technologies, remote sensors, icephobic wing coatings to reduce fuel use, emissions, noise

The Boeing ecoDemonstrator Program accelerates the testing, refinement and use of new technologies and methods that can improve efficiency and reduce noise. This new round of testing, using 787 Dreamliner ZA004, will evaluate software and connectivity technologies related to operational efficiency; remote sensors to reduce wiring; aerodynamic and flight control improvements for greater fuel efficiency, and icephobic wing coatings to reduce ice accumulation.

“The ecoDemonstrator is focused on technologies that can improve airlines’ gate-to-gate efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. “Through the ecoDemonstrator Program, Boeing continues to invest in innovation that benefits the environment and our customers.”

ecoDemonstrator 787 tests include:

  • NASA Airborne Spacing for Terminal Arrival Routes (ASTAR) to improve landing efficiency
  • New greenhouse gas sensors evaluated in collaboration with Japan Airlines and others
  • Real-time turbulence reports generated in collaboration with Delta Air Lines to mitigate moderate or greater turbulence events, resulting in improved flight efficiency and passenger comfort
  • Instrument landing systems for new and older aircraft to optimize landings and reduce fuel use
  • On-Board Wireless Sensor Network and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems microphones to reduce wiring and weight
  • Outer wing access doors made from recycled 787 carbon fiber to reduce material costs and factory waste

The ecoDemonstrator 787 completed flight tests in July for an acoustic ceramic matrix composite nozzle designed by Boeing to reduce weight and noise. These tests were part of the FAA Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) Program, a competitively bid five-year program with costs shared by participants.

The 787 Dreamliner provides airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency and exceptional environmental performance, reducing fuel use and carbon emissions by 20 percent compared with today’s similarly sized airplanes.

In 2011, with an American Airlines Next-Generation 737, the ecoDemonstrator Program tested 15 technologies including aspects of the Advanced Technology Winglet that will improve fuel efficiency by up to 1.8 percent on the new 737 MAX. In 2015, the ecoDemonstrator Program will test more technologies on a 757 in collaboration with TUI Travel Group and NASA.

Supplier partners for ecoDemonstrator 787 technologies and flight tests also include Rolls Royce, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, General Electric and Panasonic.

Mergers: European Commission approves Etihad’s acquisition of joint control over Alitalia, subject to conditions

0

LOGO CE_Vertical_EN_quadri

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of joint control over New Alitalia of Italy by Alitalia Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. (“Alitalia CAI”) of Italy, and Etihad Airways PJSC (“Etihad”) of the United Arab Emirates. New Alitalia will take over Alitalia CAI’s aviation business. The decision is conditional upon Alitalia CAI and Etihad’s commitment to, in particular, release slots to a new entrant at the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Belgrade. Currently Alitalia CAI and Air Serbia, which is jointly controlled by Etihad, are the only carriers offering direct flights on the Rome–Belgrade route. The Commission had concerns that the monopoly created by the transaction on the Rome–Belgrade route could lead to higher prices and a loss of service quality for passengers. The commitments address these concerns.

The transaction consists of the creation of a new joint venture, New Alitalia, which will receive Alitalia CAI’s aviation business as a going concern. Moreover, Etihad will acquire sole control over Alitalia Loyalty S.p.A. (Italy), a subsidiary of Alitalia CAI that manages Alitalia CAI’s frequent flyer programme.

The Commission examined the competitive effects of the proposed acquisition and concluded that on all affected routes, with the exception of the Rome–Belgrade route, the transaction does not raise any serious competition concerns, mainly because of the competitive pressure exerted by other carriers. In its investigation, the Commission also took into account the interests held by Etihad in Airberlin, Darwin Airline and Jet Airways. However, the Commission’s investigation indicated that the transaction would lead to a monopoly on the Rome–Belgrade route, where Alitalia CAI and Air Serbia are the only carriers offering direct flights.

To dispel the Commission’s competition concerns on the Rome–Belgrade route, Alitalia CAI and Etihad submitted commitments to release up to two daily slot pairs at Rome-Fiumicino and Belgrade airports to one or more interested new entrants. Alitalia CAI and Etihad also committed to provide further incentives, such as the possibility for a new entrant to acquire grandfathering rights after a fixed period of time. Furthermore, Alitalia CAI and Etihad committed to offering a special prorate agreement, a fare combinability agreement, an interline agreement and access to their frequent flyer programme to new entrants, to make entry more likely.

These commitments adequately address the competition concerns identified by the Commission and should facilitate new entry on the Rome–Belgrade route. The Commission therefore concluded that the proposed transaction, as modified by the commitments, would not raise serious competition concerns. This decision is conditional upon full compliance with the commitments.

The transaction was notified to the Commission on 29 September 2014.

Companies and products

Alitalia (Alitalia CAI) is Italy’s national carrier active in domestic and international air transport. Alitalia is a member of the SkyTeam Airline Alliance and part of a transatlantic joint venture together with Delta and Air France/KLM. Alitalia has its hub at Rome Fiumicino airport, and in 2013 it transported 24 million passengers.

Alitalia Loyalty is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alitalia fully dedicated to the operation and development of Alitalia’s Frequent Flyer Programme, the “MilleMiglia Programme”.

Etihad is the national carrier of Abu Dhabi. As of June 2014, Etihad had a fleet of 102 aircraft serving 103 destinations from its hub at Abu Dhabi International airport. In 2012 and 2013 Etihad transported 10.3 and 11.5 million passengers respectively.

Air Serbia (formerly named Jat Airways) is the flag carrier and main airline of Serbia and has its hub at Belgrade Airport. Its geographic focus is on the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. Etihad has a 49% interest in Air Serbia and a management agreement with the Government of Serbia, which owns the remaining 51% of the equity.

Merger control rules and procedures

The Commission has the duty to assess mergers and acquisitions involvingcompanies with a turnover above certain thresholds (see Article 1 of the Merger Regulation) and to prevent concentrations that would significantly impede effective competition in the EEA or any substantial part of it.

The vast majority of notified mergers do not pose competition problems and are cleared after a routine review. From the moment a transaction is notified, the Commission generally has a total of 25 working days to decide whether to grant approval (Phase I) or to start an in-depth investigation (Phase II).

More information will be available on the competition website, in the Commission’s public case register under the case number M.7333.

Iberia, once again, the World’s Most Punctual Airline

0

– With 91.11% of its flights leaving on time, the Spanish airline took first place amongst world’s top international airlines for the third time this year, according to FlightStats.
– Iberia’s customers ratings are at a record level due to the airline’s punctuality rate and the improved customer service.

Iberia has been the world’s most punctual airline for the third time in 2014.

Iberia was the world’s most punctual international airline in October according to the air travel consulting firm FlightStats.

With 91.11% of all its flights on time, Iberia has been the world’s most punctual airline for the third time in 2014. The Iberia Group, that also includes Iberia Express and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum, was also the first one of this rank in October. In the last 18 months, Iberia’s punctuality rate was above 87%.

KLM Introduces New Cabin Interior and Inflight Entertainment System Aboard 777-200 Fleet

0

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines today took into operation its first Boeing 777-200 with a fully renovated cabin interior in both World Business Class and Economy Class. The inflight entertainment system has also been fully renewed.

Previously, the World Business Class cabins aboard KLM’s Boeing 747-400 fleet were renovated. The Boeing 777-200 is now up for a full metamorphosis. In addition to the new World Business Class interior, designer Hella Jongerius has now also designed a new Economy Class interior.

The new Economy Class seats offer travellers more legroom and a whole new inflight entertainment system, featuring a larger 9-inch, HD-quality touchscreen, interactive 3D cards and a ‘seat chat’ app that allows travellers to communicate with passengers who are seated elsewhere in the cabin.

The renovation of all 15 Boeing 777-200s will be completed by the end of 2015. The Boeing 777-300 fleet and other aircraft will then be renovated. In addition, two new 777-300s, featuring the new interior and inflight entertainment system, will join the KLM fleet in 2015. KLM’s total Boeing 777 fleet with then consist of 25 aircraft.

More legroom and more comfort in Economy Class
The smart design of the new Economy Class seats creates extra legroom, thus ensuring greater comfort. In addition, the ergonomically optimised headrests offer improved neck support. Specially designed cushions as well as durable, high-density materials and a power outlet add to passenger comfort and control. And last but not least: the new inflight entertainment system offers access to more than 150 movies and 200 TV shows in many languages, including many local movies.

Image

Another key improvement is that the new seats are the lightest in their class. Less weight means lower fuel consumption and, hence, lower CO2 emissions.

The introduction of the new inflight entertainment system in both Business and Economy Class offers enough diversion for a trip around the globe and beyond – together with travel companions, in the company of fellow passengers or individually.

Luxurious personal space in World Business Class
Together with the introduction of the new Economy Class, KLM has introduced a new World Business Class interior aboard its Boeing 777 fleet. Naturally, the standard matches that of the new World Business Class interior introduced aboard the Boeing 747 fleet. The design revolves around the new full-flat seat. The positioning of the new seats in the cabin and various other smart design elements ensure maximum privacy while sleeping or working. The pallet of warm colours – that differ per seat – and plenty of storage space ensure greater comfort and more personal space for passengers. In combination with the bigger soft cushions and luxurious new blankets, all this ensures a warm and friendly atmosphere in the new World Business Class. The 16-inch screen, operated with a touchscreen handset, adds to the luxurious Business Class experience. Furthermore, passengers have a dual-screen option that allows them to watch a movie and simultaneously play a game or chat. KLM is proud that it can now also offer its customers the superb new Business and Economy Class aboard its 777-200 fleet.

Brussels Airlines presents new Belgian Star Chef Eric Pankert

1

As from December 1, a new Belgian chef presents his Business Class menus on Brussels Airlines’ long haul flights. This time it is top chef Eric Pankert of restaurant Zur Post who has concocted five menus based on local produce from the German-speaking community in East Belgium.

After first successful collaborations with Geert Van Hecke of De Karmeliet (West Flanders), Julien Lahire of Le Moulin Hideux (Luxembourg) and Thomas Locus of Bistro Margaux (Flemish Brabant), Brussels Airlines continues its Belgian Star chefs program with Eric Pankert. During the next five months he will serve his menus to Business Class customers on long haul flights to the US and Africa.

Eric Pankert has been at the helm of the Michelin-starred restaurant Zur Post, in St. Vith since 2003. He has cooked alongside well-known chefs such as Joël Robuchon, France’s “chef of the century”, in cities all over the world, inlcuding Liège, Düsseldorf, Ghent, Paris and New York. In Ghent, he was introduced to the art of pastry-making, and from New York he carried home the influence of various international cuisines. A firm believer in perfection, Pankert chooses not to follow current trends but offers his guests a modern interpretation of French cuisine instead, always adding a personal touch. He earned a 17/20 in Gault Millau and 4 “Toques” from the Belgian gastronomy guide “Guide Delta”.

The menus he has devised for Brussels Airlines include typical Belgian-French dishes with a modern interpretation. The first menu, served in December, starts with a dried beef mille-feuille, followed by goose liver wrapped in Ganda ham. For the main course passengers can choose between venison stew with a Bellevaux beer sauce, accompanied by cabbage Parmentier and fillet of sea bream enhanced by spicy carrot jus and eggplant caviar. As dessert, Zur Post’s pastry chef Edmont Peillot suggests a Bourdaloue-style apple and pear cake. The chef has also selected a beer to accompany his dishes: Bellevaux Black.

As an ambassador for Belgium, Brussels Airlines has a tradition of supporting Belgian talent and to bring Belgian top quality across the borders of its home country. On board of its flights the airline offers a selection of Belgium’s finest beers and wines, pralines, waffles and also cookies.

“We are delighted that we were able to get Eric Pankert on board for our Belgian Star Chefs program. It was a pleasure to work with Eric and to see the dedication he has put into our Business Class meals. I am convinced that his creations will add to the premium experience we want to off our Business Class guests”

— Anne Tricot, VP Customer Experience Brussels Airlines.

“I felt really honoured when I heard about my nomination as Belgian Star Chef for our national company, Brussels Airlines. It is a great pleasure for me to represent our small German-speaking community in Belgium, of which I am very proud, towards passengers from all over the world. It has been a very interesting experience to adapt my French-Belgian cuisine for Brussels Airlines’ Business Class guests, in order to offer them the most enjoyable journey possible. Maybe in the future, travellers flying over the oceans will dream about East Belgium’s wonderful woods, fields and streams, while savouring one of our regional specialities.“

The first Emirates Airbus A380 completes a 3C-Check

0

Watch the entire process captured on camera

DUBAI, U.A.E., 13th November 2014: Emirates Engineering marked another milestone when the team performed its first 3C-Check on an A380, a major overhaul that restores the airline’s first A380 aircraft to near pristine condition.
In a round-the-clock operation taking 55 days, two teams of highly specialised engineers stripped the entire interior of the double-decked aircraft to the bare metal hull, inspected and overhauled every single part, and then put the plane components back together again.

Image
emirates airbus A380

“The entire check is meticulously planned with no room for delays. Grounding an aircraft for such a long time is a tremendous expense which means that our engineering teams must not only work extremely efficiently, but also deliver to a superior standard,” said Colin Disspain, Vice President of Base Engineering at Emirates.

“Here in Dubai, we operate aircraft under some of the world’s toughest conditions, including soaring temperatures and a sandy environment. This requires Emirates to increase maintenance standards to our specific situation. For example, parts often need to be exchanged instead of just cleaned in order to achieve our high level of quality and precision.”

The check was completed with a rigorous test flight before being put back into regular service, in this case, carrying passengers to Brisbane and Auckland.

“The aircraft has been fully overhauled during its 3C-Check. We return it in a pristine condition, just as it originally left the factory,” Colin Disspain. “It’s like having a brand- new A380 again.”

Emirates was the first airline to place an order for the iconic A380, and is today the world’s largest operator of this efficient and spacious twin-deck aircraft. The airline’s first A380 (registration EDA – Echo Delta Alpha) was delivered in June 2008, and deployed on the airline’s inaugural A380 flight from Dubai to New York.
Flight hours, landings and aircraft age determine the due date for a 3C-Check. In this case Echo Delta Alpha had flown an impressive 20 million km, the equivalent of almost 27 return trips to the moon. It has completed over 3,000 take-offs and landings, carrying over 1.2 million passengers safely across the globe.
Months of meticulous planning led up to the C-Check on Echo Delta Alpha. Even though the experienced team of engineers have performed hundreds of C-Checks on the various aircraft of the Emirates fleet, this check was out of the ordinary simply because of the tremendous size of the A380. Operated until a few hours before the check, Echo Delta Alpha was towed into one of the Emirates Engineering hangars at Dubai Airport. Purpose-built for the A380, each hangar is as large as two football fields.

In the first 12 days of the check, over 1,600 parts were removed from the cabin interior including 475 Economy and Business Class seats, 14 First Class private suites, 16 galleys, 2 bars, 2 showers, floor panels and even parts of the cockpit. Every part was inspected and – where required – replaced.
A major part of the operation was the removal of two of the aircraft’s pylons which connect the engine with the aircraft’s wing. Each pylon holds a massive engine which weighs an impressive 6.7 tonnes.

The last two weeks were dedicated to putting all parts back in place with all teams on a tight schedule.

Third Lufthansa destination in Florida / First Lufthansa direct connection to Tampa / Non-stop to the Gulf of Mexico

Lufthansa continues to expand its network in the United States. For the very first time in its history, Lufthansa will offer service to the Tampa Bay area, the gateway to the West Coast of Florida. The new nonstop service from Frankfurt will begin on September 25, 2015. The airline will be operating five weekly flights in summer and four weekly in winter on the Airbus A340-300 on the route between Frankfurt and Tampa. Tampa Bay joins Miami and Orlando as Lufthansa’s third destination in Florida. The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area, a rapidly growing metropolitan region with nearly three million residents, sits on the Gulf of Mexico and boasts some of America’s best beaches.

Flight LH 482 will leave Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub and arrive in Tampa in the afternoon (local time) after a flight of nearly eleven hours. The return from Florida is a night flight, which will depart in the early evening and touch down at Frankfurt Airport in the morning of the following day. The A340-300 seats a total of 298 passengers in Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class offering the comforts and quality that Lufthansa is known for, with the newest cabin layout in all traveling classes: Seats in the new Business Class extend horizontally at the touch of a button into a flat and comfortable bed 1.98 meters (6.5 feet) in length, and the recently introduced Premium Economy Class offers more personal space and more legroom. In all classes, passengers will enjoy an individual inflight entertainment system with a plethora of offerings, along with fast broadband Internet connectivity via the FlyNet Wi-Fi hotspot onboard.

“We’re delighted that our passengers will soon be able to fly in comfort non-stop to the West Coast of Florida on flights to our new US destination at Tampa,” said Karl Ulrich Garnadt, Lufthansa Board Member and CEO Lufthansa German Airlines. “We’re expecting the new direct connection to elicit huge interest and demand, especially from leisure travelers.” Tampa and its surrounds abound with attractions for holiday-makers to visit and enjoy, such as the Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, the Florida Aquarium and the Legoland theme park. Cultural highlights include the Dali Museum in Tampa; the white-sand beaches around Clearwater and St Petersburg attract no end of tourists to the region, as do its outstanding golf courses. “We see a promising growth potential on long-haul in the leisure travel business and Lufthansa intends to be more committed to this segment in the future. The new flight to Tampa is a first step in that direction, and further attractive offerings will soon follow,” emphasized Karl Ulrich Garnadt.

Tampa is known as the birthplace of commercial aviation. 100 years ago, the first commercial flight in history occurred between St Petersburg and Tampa on 1 January 1914.

Airbus A350-900 receives FAA Type Certification

0

Successfully achieves industry’s most rigorous aircraft test programme

The world’s latest generation commercial airliner, the A350-900, received Type Certification on the 12th November from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at FAA headquarters in Washington D.C. FAA Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety Peggy Gilligan and Airbus Group Inc. Chairman Allan McArtor were among the signing authorities at the official ceremony. The certified aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. Today’s milestone follows the A350-900 Type Certification awarded by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on 30th September.

The A350-900’s respective FAA and EASA certification awards come after Airbus successfully finished a stringent program of certification trials which took the A350-900 airframe and systems well beyond their design limits to ensure all airworthiness criteria are fully met. The fleet of five test A350-900 aircraft completed the certification flight test campaign, on time, having accumulated more than 2,600 flight test hours to create and successfully achieve one of the aviation industry’s most thorough and efficient test programs ever developed for a commercial airliner.

The A350 XWB is Airbus’ all-new mid-size long range product line and the newest member of Airbus’ leading widebody family. The A350 XWB stands out in its class thanks to its combination of passenger comfort, technological innovation and its unique industrial process. Built hand-in-hand with our customers, the A350 XWB sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. At the end of October 2014, the A350 XWB had won 750 orders from 39 customers worldwide.

Finnair to begin operating summer route to Chicago

0

Finnair will start flying to Chicago next summer, from 13 June to 17 October 2015. Flights will be operated three times a week with Airbus A330 aircraft. Departures from Helsinki and Chicago are on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 17:25 and arrive in Chicago (ORD) at 18:40 local time. Return flights to Helsinki depart at 22:00 and arrive the following day at 14:50.

Finnair’s Chicago service is included in the joint business on transatlantic traffic with fellow oneworld alliance partners British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines and American’s merger partner US Airways. Chicago is a hub for American, which allows Finnair’s customers quick codeshare connections to destinations throughout the United States, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The joint business between the cooperating airlines also gives customers the possibility to mix and match flights on different carriers for the best pricing and scheduling. For example, an itinerary could include a nonstop flight to Chicago in one direction, but a return flight connecting through another transatlantic hub if the timing is more convenient.

“Chicago is a great addition to our summer destinations, and is in demand with leisure travelers from Northern Europe,” says Petri Vuori, Finnair’s VP Global Sales. “Finnair’s timetable allows for easy connections to Chicago from throughout our extensive network in Europe and even Asia. Chicago, as a hub of our oneworld partner American Airlines, also offers excellent onward connections in America.”

Located on the southern shores of Lake Michigan with a population of 2.7 million within the city limits and more than 9 million in the wider metro area, Chicago is the largest city in the American Midwest and a global hub for business, leisure and the arts. Famous for its skyline and iconic architecture – Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper – the city boasts world-class cultural institutions, professional sports teams, public art, restaurants and shopping.

Due to opening the Chicago route, Finnair’s seasonal summer service to Hanoi will be discontinued. Finnair’s previously announced new summer destinations in 2015 include Athens, Dublin, Malta and Split.
