During the New Year weekend, Austrian received its fifth brand new A320neo, registered OE-LZR, in an all-white livery (in expectation of the regular Austrian red & white colours).

In addition to its fleet of five A320neos, the airline operates 29 older-generation Airbus A320-200 aircraft, 17 Embraer ERJ 190 regional jets, and six Airbus A321s.

According to ch-aviation, the airline is awaiting the delivery of 11 787-9s, starting in Q1 2024, to replace 6 old Boeing 777s and 3 Boeing 767s.

Indeed, the aircraft will be painted at a point later this year at BTS.

Austrian to receive its first two Dreamliners in 2024, plans first transatlantic routes with new type

The process of transforming Austrian's longhaul fleet from the ageing B767/777 fleet to a new single-type one is taking shape: Contrary to initial plans, the new fleet should consist of 11 Boeing 787-9 (instead of 10): as first step, the current fleet will be joined by two Dreamliners and later by five more - these five will likely be those aircraft initially ordered by the HNA Group for Hainan but not taken up (some of these already in service with a "Hainansa" cabin for Lufthansa). The remaining four seem to be delivered directly to Austrian in the following years.

The first two Dreamliners are not entirely new - it's a pair of B787-9 that flew for Bamboo Airways since late 2019:
MSN 62735, ex VN-A818, to be registered OE-LPM
MSN 62736, ex VN-A819, to be registered OE-LPL

The two aircraft should be delivered in March resp. April 2024 and after an initial overhaul in Vienna, they will get their cabins adjusted at EGAT in Taipeh.

Austrian's plans on which routes the new jets should be employed can be seen via the booking system of the airline: after shorthaul intra-continental training flights, the Dreamliners seem to be planned for routes from Vienna to New York-JFK (mid-June) and Chicago (July). Also, due to the arrival of the Dreamliners, Austrian will have the additional capacity to open op a new route to Boston-Logan.

Austrian's first pair of Dreamliners to appear soon

Austrian Airlines is expecting its first Dreamliner to touch down at its homebase in the coming days. The aircraft, a former Bamboo Airways B787-9and currently stored in Tarbes, is already wearing its new registry OE-LPM and is due to be ferried to Vienna sometime between 22-25 March. On recent spotting pictures from Tarbes, the aircraft is still wearing its Bamboo Airways livery.
Meanwhile, the other B787-9, registered OE-LPL, will be ferried to EGAT in Taipeh for cabin outfit, before flying to Vienna.

As Aviation24 reported yesterday, one of Austrian Airlines' A320neo aircraft sustained severe damage in a ground incident. The aircraft OE-LZQ (MSN 11467) returned from a flight to LHR as OS456 on the evening of 6 April 2024 and was subsequently towed to a remote parking position. According to newest information from Vienna, after the towing, neither was the parking brake activated, nor were chocks placed. Subsequently, due to a slight slope of the apron, the aircraft began rolling backwards, with the right horizontal stabilizer severely damaging a jetbridge and eventually completely ripped off - and the right wing damaged by a lamp post.

According to initial assessment, the damage is severe - and should the inspection result in finding that the wing box sustained structural damage, there is a possibility that the aircraft will have to be written off.
