My mother is just on her way to NRT from FCO on a JL flight (JL400 B744)...
I had a little fear moment when I read the HLN article :)

Runway A is closed, probably not open until later today.
I'll hear from her about eventual diversion (a diversion to HND would come in handy ;-) ) and let you guys know.

RIP to the crew...

Indeed, again a very sad day...

Seems like a very uncontrolled landing :?

I know it will be speculations, but does anyone have an idea why the plane was 'jumping' like this. I have had some hard landings on board different aircraft myself while travelling, but this seems 'uncontrolled' like highinthesky says...

Also i wish my give my condolances to the crew and their relatives.

Again I have that sad feeling that the pilots died ,despite the cockpit still looks OK. Same with the Turkish Airlines crash , and even the Panam Lockerbie crash.
But I can assume that the inside looks very grimm. Respect for the guys who have to retrieve the bodies.

My mother confirmed that she was diverted to HND, which came in handy.

The JL400 (FCO-NRT B744) captain's announcement:
"Ladies and gentlemen, today I must tell you a story... this morning at approx. 8:30am, there has been a crash accident at NRT and the longer runway has become unusable. Our Jumbo-jet can not land on the shorter runway, so we must land at HND instead. I apologise for the inconvenience. It is also going to be very bumpy into HND due to strong wind gusts, so please sit tight."

Apparently her aircraft was cracking and shaking violently all the way into the approach, which confirms the difficult circumstances encountered by the unlucky crew of FedEx.

It seems they were taken out soon and they were transported to the hospital - but it was too late.
