After a quick search : from 27/04/07:
French engine manufacturer Snecma has revealed a concept engine for future single-aisle aircraft which could be in operation by 2015.
and :
...
The design is completely different to that being pursued by Pratt & Whitney, which is working on a geared turbofan (GTF) to achieve the quantum leap in fuel burn that will be required of the next generation of aero-engines.

Looks like a competition between technologies, somebody is looking for money for the development?

The boss of easyJet has called on the European regulators to ban any aircraft built before 1990 from operating within the EU after January 1, 2012 (almost 700 aircraft).
"Our proposal would have a dramatic impact on Europ's aviation emission, said CEO Andy Harrison. Some aircraft are dramatically more environmentally-efficient than others".

For as long as Africa is on the same planet as we are, I don't see how it could solve the GLOBAL problem.

Btw, how many of Brussels Airlines BAe's have been produced before 1990?
I thought -DJE/F/J/H were the oldest in the fleet and they were build in 1990.
Most of the Avro's are from 1998-1999.

Yep that's right, the oldest are from the 90's.
OO-DJF is the oldest in the fleet, 'born' on 30 april 1990 :P (date of first flight)
