Original: getting married in a Boeing 747 !

Post by luchtzak »

This is one of the best locations for aviation enthusiasts to get married: a Boeing 747, you can choose between economy class, business class or the cargo-compartments:

The jumbo is located in the Aviodrome at Lelystad:

so why do KLM don't use this 747-400 ? if it would be a 747-200 i would understand, but the 747-400 is too recent to be in a museum, no ?

Yes indeed, my mistake  It's the last classic Boeing 747 so it must be a 747-200.

Because the original upperdeck was stretched.

It's 747-200SUD (Stretched Upper Deck) in the 1980's KLM enlarged the upper deck of some of it's 747-200's, and PH-BUK was one of them...

well it looks the same outside, but the 200SUD's where built as "normal" 200's in the seventies and only received the larger upperdeck in the eighties, while the 300's got them newly built. that's probably the only difference...

Just the upper deck, I've seen a pic and report about how they did it somewhere...

This pic dont show a 747-400, she has no winglets and other engines! The 747-200 Stretched upper deck received at the time some cockpit modifications and enlarged fueltanks, so that the klm could use this planes on 747-300 routes........

I keep reading on forums that these KLM birds were 747-200 SUD's - which is fine. However, having flown on probably all of the KLM 200SUD's / 300's at one point or another over the last 10 or 12 years I must say I curious. On no occasion did the safety card say B747-200SUD - it was always B747-300 or with 7 pallet added to indicate combi. How come KLM just referred to them as 747-300's if they weren't?

ALso - did they really just stretch the upper decks of a -200? Surely not after building? I wouldn't have thought that would be cost effective for anyone?

The B747-200SUD programme wasn't successful since KLM was the only customer operating them.

They had indeed a streched upper deck, which was a design with less drag then the B747 with a smaller upperdeck. In addition to that they were able to seat more people on that deck.

I don't know why only KLM had them though ?

Thannks, though I just can;t understand how it would have been cost effective to stretch after building even allowing for drag. Also - any idea why KLM kept calling them 747-300's when they weren't?

hi,

for this topic, a nice article is:

http://home.swipnet.se/~w-65189/transpo ... series.htm

German listing of 747 types ever built:

http://www.luftfahrt-eisenach.de/B747/B747.htm

... just nice to read.

I would expect that if they have 1 type of card to save costs, as the planes are effectivly identicle.
