From BRU to GVA

06:40 SN

Since I don't find where to put it, I'll put it here:

BRU november 2023 figures: 1.6 million pax
Total 2023: 20.6 million

First time since 2019 that BRU is back at 20 million passengers
Although I read everywhere that airports are going back to their 2019 figures, we cannot say the same for BRU.
Anyone knows why? Are we recovering slower than other airports?

On the one hand, many long haul did not yet return: e.g. Atlanta, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai ... or are operated at a reduced frequency, e.g. Tokyo.

Other airports have a lot of tourism travel, such as the ones in Southern Europe, BRU has those a lot less. Holiday travel is booming.

In general also business travel, e.g. related to the EC, is down. After COVID many organizations in Belgium reviewed their travel policies (e.g. the university of Ghent does not allow travel by plane anymore). In fact we also reduced travel for environmental reasons.

In general, Belgians are less travel minded maybe?

Just a few wild guesses :D

Feist has always said it'll be recovered by 2025 due to the slow recovery in business travels.

And don't forget the situation in Israel. SN flew to TLV daily, some days twice a day. And ElAl had previously stopped on the TLV-BRU-TLV route.

Holiday travels are very OK. Don't forget that we have now a Transavia base and Corendon base which was before covid not at all. Also SN has a huge amount of holiday travels on their plate.

The main reason is long haul. Most of them, Asian, are not returned at all.

Also don't forget that the home carrier reduced drastically their fleet. In meantime they are growing again but this is not fully visible yet in the monthly figures

Booking are too low at this moment.
Brussels Airlines has decided to extend the cancellation of all flights to Tel Aviv until February 4 2024 included.

No update yet from HU. Their latest update was on 11.12.
But yes, when they start up it's mostly 2x week

It seems that TUI completely cancels Bejaia, Constantine, Tlemcen, with last flights in January - only Algiers and Oran remain in Algeria.

JetBlue is looking for expansion in Europe. They are not sure if they will have slots during the Summer at AMS.
In meantime they have filled 840 slots at LIS for 2 daily flights. But also there is silent.
The next new destinations for JetBlue in Europe are Dublin and Edinburgh in Summer 2024.

For some reasons, no BRU on their list at all while here is no competition on certain routes. In LIS e.g. they have a lot of competition

Filled or filed?
(840 slots is daily only with a second flight once week.)

Know that you are in the Winter 2024 topic while you are talking about next summer ;)
Also, I don't believe JetBlue will arrive anytime soon, even if (and this isn't even sure) they get kicked out of AMS... 2025 at the earliest.
