BRU-BUD-BRU on Malev

Post by Air_Lac »

I have just returned from a trip to Budapest.

First time I flew with MALEV Hungarian Airlines. A very pleasant exprience. Flights were operated by Boeing B-737-6Q8 (HA-LOF and HA-LOD). Both two very new aircraft (hardly a few months old); it was a nice surprise to have the B-737-600, as according to www.amadeus.net a 737-300 was announced.

The inflight service (economy) was very friendly and good. Warm dinner (something which is becoming rather exceptional on European flights).

Seating is generous, also for tall persons. If you are lucky you even seat on business class seats (if there are not many business class passengers they move the curtain). Economy seating starts at row 6 (in the 737-600).

They also have screens and show some cartoons and flight track.

Budapest airport is nice, but not very good for shopping.

Within a 5-minutes walking distance there is a small aircraft museum displaying some former MALEV aircraft:
Antonov AN-2
Lisunov Li-2
Ilyushin IL-14
Ilyushin IL-18
Tupolev TU-135
Tupolev TU-154
Yakolev YAK-42 (LRI Flight Inspection)

It was closed, when I passed by, but I was still able to take spot the aircraft quite well.

Nice report Air-Lac.
Sounds like Malev is a good airline to fly on.

Did you made some pictures from the inside of the plane or from the once in the museum?

Best Regards,
Yvo

Thanks for the nice report!

MA is in my opinion a very good airline...

I'm glad you got the B736! It's a very rare bird to fly on...

Before I forget: what was the loadfactor on your flights?

Thanks

Yes, I took some pictures - but I am still into 'old-fashioned' photography with prints. The picutres are medium :-( (I tried an ASA 800 film as arrival and departure were in night/twilight).

Loadfactor was probably 50% on BRU-BUD (I had a row for myself) and 80% in flight back (still the seat next to me was empty).

Thanks for nice report. If you flew on business, I understand why you chose MA rather than SN: better schedules.

Wasn't it rather Tu-134? Never heard of Tu-135...

You are right indeed, it is a typographical error it is of course the TU-134 (Tu-135 is quite another bird :-)) (see http://www.suchoj.com/andere/index.htm? ... home.shtml )

Here is some more information on the aircraft exhibited near Budapest-Ferhegy airport:
Lisunov Li-2 (Soviet build DC-3) Malev HA-LIQ (picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/188624/M/ )
Ilyushin Il-18 HA-MOA Malev (very old colours)(picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/228089/M/ )
Tupolev Tu-134 Malev HA-LBE (old clours) (picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/400803/M/ )
Tupolev Tu-154 HA-LCG Malev (new/current colour scheme) (picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/030080/M/ )
Ilyushin Il-12 (and not as initially reported Il-14) 04 red (c/n 147001821)
Yakolev Yak-42 HA-YLR (LRI Flight Inspection Service) (picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/216523/M/ )
Antonov 2 (An-2) HA-MHI (picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/127952/M/ with Il-12 in the background)

Those are nice pistures Air_Lac.
Is it also possible to "board" those planes. I see stairs near the TU134 and TU154 and the doors are open.

Would be great to visit those birds from the inside.

I actually found these pictures on www.airliners.net (they are unfortunately not mine).

If you look further on the above site you will find some pictures from the inside of those aircraft (just go to the search engine and give in the registration number/s).
Probably one can visit (board) one or the other aircraft.

I think some of the aircraft can be visisted. The museum is open as follows:
* from March to September, Mondays-Sundays 09.00-18.00
* from October to November, Mondays-Sundays 09.00-16.00
