Narita was not open in the early seventies. This was probably after the O'Hare AA DC-10 crash in 1979.

I flew lots of shorthaul widebody flights in the USA and Canada in the eighties and early nineties.
amongst others :
LGA-YYZ AC767
YYZ-ORD AA DC10
SNA-DFW AA DC10
DEN-ORD UA DC10
BOS-DTW NW DC10
ATL-DFW DL L1011
these short widebody flights are now mostly replaced by boring 737's or 320's...
