Re: Berlin New Airport

Post by airazurxtror »

The insolvency of Dutch engineering group Royal Imtech's German arm could delay further the completion of Berlin's new international airport, the airport's operator warned on Friday.

"It is clear to us that the insolvency has an impact on our planning, which sees construction completed in March 2016," the airport's chief Karsten Muehlenfeld said in a statement.
IF IT AIN'T BOEING, I'M NOT GOING.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is now unlikely to open before 2019 !!!

http://www.businesstraveller.com/news/b ... efore-2019

The initial inauguration date (for which a group of Luchtzak members booked a trip) was 3 June 2012.... (with Brussels Airlines being the first airline to depart from BER on 3 June in the early morning).

Despite airport management mentioned this week that the target date for opening the airport is second half of 2017, there are rumours now that the airport may never open.

http://www.thelocal.de/20160427/berlins ... never-open

Billions of euros spent for that?

But maybe a ray of hope for SN, which was the very first airline that would have used BER: Due to the chronic delays, the state governments of Berlin and Brandenburg are also likely to have to pay out millions in compensation to airlines which planned their businesses around a 2011 opening.

Hooray !!! Big celerbration. The longer that dump stays closed the better. I love Tegel such a convenient, easy, stressfree airport. #fightforTXL #BurnBrandenburg

The opening of Berlin’s new Brandenburg airport (BER) is highly unlikely to take place this year.

BER’s opening has now been postponed four times. And this is for a main airport for a capital city which should have opened back in 2011. Technical problems are the cause.

Airportzentrale.de reports that “there are problems with several hundred doors and the sprinkler system. Only 20 per cent of the 1,400 doors work flawlessly. In an emergency test it was found that the doors would not close and the sprinkler system would not start. It almost sounds like a bad joke. Both problems are directly related to the smoke extraction system which has already caused problems.”

Ryanair CMO Kenny Jacobs says Berlin’s passenger volume will nearly triple by 2050, thus the local government should contemplate building a third airport in addition to TXL, which should not close, and BER.

Maybe it can change for the better and open in 2018? :)

I still wonder what can prevent a finished airport to open for so many years.

I was tempted to add an ironic comment too but I realized that the ad inserted below the Luchtzak News title was ... err, shall I say to the point ?

There are many construction issues with the building but one of the biggest issue is still the fire protection system which just doesn't work like it should be. Just one example, the pipes used for the sprinkler systems are to small, they can't withstand the necessary pressure to operate the sprinkler nozzles effectively. To repair this they will have to remove the roof to have access to all piping. They even done reconstruction on lower, underground levels (there's a railway station under the airport), and after they were done these changes were declined due not being up to specs with the building plans, motors to open the windows in case of a fire don't operate about 30°C, etc... the list goes on and on and on and ...

It's been said quite a few times that it would be faster and cheaper to demolish the airport and build a new one but I guess that will be out of the question to save a little bit of face...

Original budget for the airport: 2,83 billion USD
Costs as of last year (May 2016): 6,9 billion USD...

Surprise, surprise,...

According to the Zeit, BER is not about to open anytime soon.

Quick Google translation :
The situation on the construction site of the capital city airport BER is according to a newspaper report so chaotic that an opening of the airport before 2021 - 15 years after start of construction - is unlikely.
This is what the Tagesspiegel writes, relying on a report by TÜV Rheinland / Berlin-Brandenburg from the beginning of November as well as the current status report for Brandenburg's top building inspection.

So let's wait till 2021.

This must be an attempt to get in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest time needed to construct a building :/
