Delayed opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg airport

Post by sn26567 »

Safety is number one priority: Technical issues concerning fire protection installations make deferral of opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport necessary

New Berlin Brandenburg Airport will commence operations after summer holiday period

The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will open later than planned. This con-clusion was reached by the airport operator in view of the latest findings gathered over the past few days. Up until now the project leadership team was convinced to be able to meet the deadline of the opening on 3 June, also with regard to the technical requirements concerning safety. Following several crisis meetings over the weekend, the project leadership team has reached the conclusion that the completion and subsequent acceptance tests of certain safety relevant installations was no longer possible by the planned opening date. The airport operating company therefore decided to change course 27 days before the planned opening to prevent any potential shortcomings in the area of safety.

In view of these developments, the airport operating company has decided to take the following steps:
  • Preliminarily putting a stop to the move of air traffic from Schönefeld and Tegel to BER
  • Deferral of the opening of the new airport until after the summer holi-day period
Recently the planned inauguration of the airport on 3 June 2012 has be-come a race against time, and at the moment 7,000 construction workers are currently working on Europe’s largest airport construction site. The Open Days on 12 and 13 May which were planned some time ago are not affected by the deferral of the opening date.

Air Berlin as well as Lufthansa and easyJet have all publicly asked for the opening of Berlin Brandenburg International (BER) to be postponed to October 28, the start of the IATA winter timetable period, arguing that an earlier date during the high season would not be ideal.

Air Berlin is also requesting to temporarily adjust operating times at Berlin Tegel (TXL) in the meantime to allow flights between 23.00 and midnight and between 05.00 and 06.00 as it would have been the case at the new airport.

Cargo Center at BER officially inaugurated

Today marks another milestone on the way to the opening of BER: in an official ceremony the Cargo Center on the grounds of Berlin Brandenburg Airport was inaugurated. The first tenants already have their own offices in the building. The next step is the gradual relocation of the authorities needed for goods clearance (plant health control, veterinary border controls, customs). In August 2013 the first airport processes start taking place at the BER Cargo Center, including the cargo handling services of UPS and Fedex and belly freight loading at Schönefeld. At the same time work will start to put in place the basic infrastructure which is the fundamental precondition for successful passenger operations. The Cargo Center is an essential module on the way along to the path to opening BER successfully and as soon as possible.

The opening of the Cargo Center at BER will also help to alleviate the air cargo situation at Tegel. From September 2013 air freight can be trucked to BER for handling. The cargo infrastructure in Tegel is reaching the limits of its capacity. Since 2010, the volume of cargo handled here has increased by 60 per cent and it is not feasible to enlarge the Tegel centre by expanding the cargo grounds.

The Cargo Center has 12,000 square meters of hall floor space, 7,000 square meters of office space and will open with a capacity of around 100,000 tons of freight per year. It is connected to the apron directly through a separate access control point. The Cargo Center will be used for handling belly freight specifically on long-haul flights at Berlin Brandenburg Airport once these have been relocated from Tegel to BER.

More delays likely before opening of Berlin Brandenburg

Berlin airport operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg again appears to be delaying the opening date for the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI).

The opening of Berlin Brandenburg has been delayed four times—with the last suspension, in spring 2012, announced just weeks before airport was scheduled to launch operations—but in July CEO Hartmut Mehdorn said he would detail an opening schedule in October. However, Mehdorn now is telling local media that he will announce a date within the next two to three months, or perhaps even later.

Under the latest plan, Mehdorn plans an advance opening of the north pier of the new terminal, for a maximum of 10 daily flights. He hopes that this will help to test the facility before operations are fully ramped-up. But, even that move requires significant investment, as the pier has no security checkpoints and no check-in facilities.

The decision also is subject to regulatory approvals, which may prove to be problematic. If these are granted, the building could in be operation starting around spring 2014.

While spring 2014 now seems to be the earliest possible date for limited operations at the north pier the real full-blown airport opening is unlikely before sometime in 2015.

Modifications to the fire protection system are expected to take until at least late 2014 to implement, and even if that process coincides with the completion of all other outstanding work, months of testing would have to follow before the facility could open.

Germania to be first operating airline at Berlin Brandenburg Airport

Germania Fluggesellschaft will become the first airline to operate from the much-delayed Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

As a first step, the carrier will switch operations from Berlin Tegel to Berlin Schoenefeld airport as of Nov. 1 and plans to start later from the Pier Nord (North Pier).

The move should help Berlin Brandenburg launch operations as soon as possible. A new Germania timetable will be announced later.

Germania operates from Berlin to Adana (Turkey), Beirut (Lebanon) and Skopje (Macedonia) as well as charter flights to the Canary Islands, Egypt and the Middle East, with a fleet of 10 Boeing 737s and 8 Airbus A319s.

Earlier this month, it has been reported the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport could start minor operations in the first half of next year with about 10 flights per day, handling around 1,500 passengers daily. The airport, which was originally planned to open in October 2011, has been delayed four times, mostly recently in early 2012 because of construction problems.

Berlin's new Brandenburg Airport won't open until 2015

Berlin's much-delayed Brandenburg International Airport will remain closed for another year, increasing the strain on Berlin's existing airports as the high-profile project continues to fall behind schedule.

'Sometime in 2015' is now the sixth proposed opening date for the new airport, which was originally slated for a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October 2011 but now sits idle, despite appearing complete from the outside.

The cost of the Brandenburg hub has soared from its initial €2.5 billion budget to exceed €4.3 billion, with a sub-standard fire safety system leading the host of problems held responsible for the setbacks.

Airport CEO Hartmut Mehdorn last year proposed that the first commercial services could begin in "March or April" of this year, although there would be a ceiling of ten flights per day.

This would see the airport handling a mere 1,500 passengers per day instead of the 82,000 per day for which it was designed.

But any hopes of an opening this year was swept off the calendar overnight when Klaus Wowereit, chairman of Brandenburg Airport's supervisory board and also mayor of Berlin, confirmed that "the airport cannot be opened in 2014."

Wowereit said that while technical solutions to the airport‘s many problems have been found, now it will come down to implementing those solutions.

Brandenburg has been built to replace three airports serving the German capital – including the existing Berlin Schönefeld Airport on which the new facility is based, which sees Berlin Brandenburg Airport handily located just 18 kilometres south of central Berlin.

No further risks of delays to opening date of new capital airport

Statement regarding today’s news report by rbb

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH dismisses the claims in today’s news report by regional radio and television broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) of there being further risks of delays to the opening date of the new capital airport. Airport spokesman Ralf Kunkel explains: “The account by rbb is not correct. There are no changes to the current level of knowledge. Since we have not specified an opening date, it is not even possible for a new delay to exist. We do not comment on internal matters.”

BERLIN —The opening of Germany’s Berlin Brandenburg International Airport has been once again delayed. As reported today by the German news channel N-TV and several German newspapers, the opening of the German capital’s new international airport will take place at the earliest in March 2016. The opening of the airport was initially scheduled for October 2011 but has been delayed several times due to issues with the construction planning and problems with the building’s fire safety system.

Brandenburg does not expect BER opening until 2017

The state of Brandenburg, as one of the two owners, is not expecting an opening of the new Capital Airport before more than two years from now. "The year 2017 does not seem unrealistic to me in the present situation," said Brandenburg's Minister of Finance Christian Görke in "Tagesspiegel" this Monday.

He was curious to see what timetable Airport CEO Hartmut Mehdorn will present to the Board on 12 December.

2017 is five years after the originally planned date. So far for the German efficiency...

Berlin seeks private investors for new airport

* Berlin airport woos potential private investors
* Airport spokesman says there are no new developments
* Airport opening has been delayed from 2012 to 2017 (airport statement)

Berlin is wooing private investors, including Macquarie and JP Morgan, to take a stake in its much-delayed new international airport. The airport is jointly owned by the city of Berlin, the state of Brandenburg and Germany's federal government. The owners expect a detailed report by the end of the year on whether a part-privatisation would be worthwhile, adding the federal government wants to sell its 26 percent stake once the airport is operational.

According to the most recent news, BER (Berlin Brandenburg International Airport) should open in the second half of 2017. Meanwhile, SXF and TXL will both remain open.
