Today Stansted airport revealed it had broken the 22 million annual passenger milestone for the rolling year total for the first time in more than six years – and served more than two million people monthly for five months in a row for the first time since 2008.

Directors at the airport hope that even if the fast pace of 15.8% year-on-year growth – which saw passenger numbers break 20 million annually just eight months ago – does not continue, the record of 23.9m hit in 2007 will be beaten at some point during 2016.

Mark Souter, the airport’s head of business development, said: “There has been a huge amount going on here, particularly since the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) took over ownership. MAG has been pumping money into improvements at the terminal so we are growing fast but also making a good experience for passengers as well. We are only about halfway through spending £260m in five years.”

It is not just about passenger numbers at Stansted, as the amount of cargo handled through the airport’s freight operation has also continued to rise while the average number of seats filled on each flight has reached 87.8%.

It's a pity that Stansted cannot be reached from Belgium, the nearest departure being from Eindhoven (CRL-STN has been cut quite a few years ago). It provided a good link to London with the Stansted Express, and, more importantly, to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford !

An Eurowings Airbus A330-200 performing flight 4U-592 from Cologne/Bonn to Palma de Mallorca with 169 passengers and 13 crew, departed Cologne's runway 14L when the engine access doors of the left hand engine (CF6) opened and separated. The crew continued the flight and in absence of abnormal indications landed in Palma de Mallorca without further incident about 2 hours later.

Austrian Airlines rethinks its seatplacement for their A319 and A320's:

They pushed the economy seats closer together. (From 76cm to 73cm)
So that they could put another row of seats in the back. (From 168 to 174 seats, in the A320)
But the business class passengers get some more space. (From 76cm to 81cm)

This project started 3 days ago.

Press & Books outlet opens at Luxembourg Airport
Designed to meet the needs of passengers before departure, the Press & Books outlet boasts many books and press titles in different languages (German, French, English, Luxembourgish and Portuguese, for example), but also offers drinks, snacks, tobacco products, telephone cards and even souvenirs.
The new store is the first in a long line of shops and restaurants scheduled to open in the terminal during the first few months of 2016, with 12 outlets in total being fully renovated.

Italian Civil aviation authority ENAC on Wednesday voiced concern over an expected surge in air traffic in Rome during the upcoming Special Jubilee of Mercy.
It also said it was concerned about how Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) would cope with increased traffic at Fiumicino over the coming years.
Millions of pilgrims are set to descend on Rome during the Holy Year that runs from December 8 to next November 20.

IAG has made Alex Cruz, the boss of budget subsidiary carrier Vueling, the new chief executive of British Airways. Cruz will replace Keith Williams as chairman and chief executive of British Airways, who is set to retire next April. The consensus at IAG is that Cruz has done a good job at Barcelona-based Vueling, fending off budget rivals like Ryanair and EasyJet on routes around Europe.

Cruz was the boss of another budget airline called Clickair which merged with Vueling in 2009 as the industry consolidated amid high fuel costs and general downturn. This made Vueling the second largest Spanish carrier, in which Iberia took a 45% stake. In 2013 IAG took control of the remainder of Vueling to run it as a standalone discount brand, with Cruz reporting directly to IAG chief Willie Walsh.

It should be said, Vueling has seen year-on-year growth since Cruz took over. The budget airline market is very competitive, and one in which Cruz has taken the fight to his discounting rivals. Whatever expediency he employed to achieve that won't have be to as stringently enforced at BA - at least let's hope not. Vueling has an appalling customer satisfaction track record.
