Looking back @ 2011

A topic started last year by our member SpottairBRU, what's your final result for 2011 and your idea about 2012?

Mine :

2011 was a top year !

Flights : 42
New types : D8Q400,B772,EMB145,Bae146-200 and my first chopper an AS350
New airports: RIX-PRG-LIS-BLQ-MST-BJV-TRN-LGA-RDU-ORD-BUF-TLN-ATH-VIE and the long waited for LHr & JFK
New airliners: AirBaltic-TAP-Germanwings-BMI BABY-Corendon- American Airlines/Eagle
Most remarkable event on plane : BMI Baby steward with a no-nonsense shout to pax to be quite during safety briefing
Most remembering event : birth of the 'bru.air.avgeeks' daytrip-club
Most missed thing : no classic one this year , just a near miss to get on the Ju52

Remarks on 2011 : the solarpowered plane visit, the Korongo saga, BeOnTop , loadfactors of SN, the fleet of SN decrease but also increased , FR and EZY still here and growing a bit, LH non moves , Jet *A..

2012

Will be a lot of AZ/SN flights, some new nordic desti's OSL-KUN-BMA with EWR-EZY-MIA and planetypes A346 & B773. No new airliners (yet )
TLS and the last SN flight will be special with the avgeeks and HAM as a Xmas 2012 dessert I may guess..

Further : 2012 will be hard for aviation,oil-prices,dollar raising, with no expecting LH actions towards SN.. AA chapter 11, and trouble with a lot of other airliners... but a ray of sun over the expected props/A330/new interiors/A319-320's of SN... and with the RJ85's leaving the fleet our topics will also be quite full to debate here... in 2012..

2011 for me - two flights (LBA-BRU and BRU-LBA), all on the same aircraft we flew on last year (and one flight with exactly the same crew as one of our 2010 flights). Spotting/video/photo wise it was bad, LBA is an appalling place for viewing and alot of the good bits in BRU have been taken over by shops and bars so it is getting harder there to get video.

I haven't a clue what I will do in 2012, BMI's sale to BA throws some of their routes into doubt, we don't know what will happen on the Regional services so it is not secure to book any flights with them I don't think.

BMI Regional doesn't go to BA. It is likely to survive as an independent airline in the hands of a group of Scottish investors. However they might well decide to sell it to a larger airline...

This sale of BMI to BA is probably (at the European level) one of the big stories of 2011. And the story may well continue in 2012, as Sir Richard is not very happy and will do everything he can to stop the deal. LH management has antagonised a man who could have been a powerful ally and has probably thrown VS in the arms of Skyteam instead of Star Alliance.

I would like to see BMI Regional survive, but there is alot of uncertainty still, mainly about the routes they would fly. I would like to see them keep the BRU services going, apart from MAN they fly all the routes from northern England into BRU, even doing the NCL for Brussels Airlines.

They will operate some routes (NCL and BRS) for Brussels Airlines until the end of the summer season 2012.

Haha, CX-B, you beat me: I was about to start the thread

For me, 2011 was a very good year:

- I flew 10628km (according to openflights.org) in 16 segments
- discovered 4 new airports: VIE, DUS, STR, GVA
- flew with 2 new airlines: LH and LAN
- could add three new types to my signature: A318, A340, CRJ700
- realized one of my dreams: going to Le Bourget Airshow (even if I was a bit disappointed)
- had the opportunity to see a (small) event in aviation history: the arrival of the first solar energy powered plane in Brussels (Belgium)
- the BRU avgeeks trips

Now, some small regrets:

- My eternal Azores trip on A310 (to be able to say: I flew all types of Airbus!) that probably won't be before 2013 (pray for SATA to keep them until then!)
- No annual spotting trip to LHR (was a tradition from 2007 on)
- No general aviation flight (was able to get on one every year since 2008)

Now, looking forward to 2012 (already two new airports and one new type booked)

What was the most important travel event of 2011?

For the British travel agents (AERBT) it has to be the introduction into airline service of the Boeing 787.

We don’t know what the future holds but it is fairly safe to say that in 20 years’ time over 1,000 further copies will be flying and all the aggravations of the last three years will be forgotten. The aircraft was due to be the transport star of Beijing 2008!

When shall we get the first trip report on a 787? Let's hope it will come to Europe, and more particularly Brussels, in 2012.
