So they activated the very unusual 07L with a slight tailwind? But I have my doubts about this METAR, here in Brussels city centre I see a solid overcast... and it looks quite lower than 4600 feet too

Slight tailwind? Winds are from 110° @ 8kts... that's tailwind for the 25R indeed, but suitable for the very unusual 07L as you stated.

Indeed the METAR is not correct, regarding the overcast.
I've looked it up on http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/metar.shtml

Anyone want to share another source?

According to the ATIS channel:
07L for arrivals
07R for departures
Wind 090° @ 7 knots

Normally with this conditions they would use 02 for landings, but 07 is also possible.
Note that there is an ILS on the 02 and not on the 07L or R.
I don't know why they're using the 07's today.

There's nothing wrong with the METAR.

METAR is correct.
New rule since about one year: at the Belgian civil airports cloudbase above 5000 ft ain't mentioned anymore as not of significant use for aviation.

In case of several cloud types and/or layers, criteria of reporting:

- 1st group: lowest cloud regardless amount
- 2nd group: next cloud layer with minimum covarge of 3/8 octas
- 3th group: next cloud layer with minimal coverage of 5/8 octas
- 4th group: only if CB is present

It was nice to see the 747 RAM above the ring of Brussels !
Nice approach from Groot Bijgaarden - gear down - flaps down - descending to Brussels City for landing 07L !

It's a visual approach for 07L? More difficult for a pilot?

It's a VOR app, pilots initialy fly on a BUB vor radial. At 4,4nm from BUB they continue visually.

VOR-DME.
I don't have a clue about the difficultiness of both ILS and VOR-DME approaches.

The wind maxima for the use of rwy 02 do not allow for any tailwind. From the moment there is even the slightest tailwind component 02 cannot be used.

If you only look the the wind, rwy 02 can be used for landing. Wind 100° 06Kt -> for rwy 02 that's only cross wind. A maximum of 15kt crosswind (rwy 02 and 20) is allowed, gusts included.

 About 07L. Not the first time the last days.

It was the case last monday as well. Also aroud 12.00pm. And also the sight of AT's 744 over the ring.

This is very non-standard. The SIA Cargo 744 made a very very late final right turn for VOR/DME 07L. A bit of KaiTak in BRU :P :P :P

What a sight !!!! This beast rules !!
