According to Luchtvaartnieuws.nl, the news is officially denied by China Airlines. It is evaluating a fleet renewing, but has taken no decision. The A380 is also still in the running, and they claim no diplomatic influence in their decision...

To be continued is my guess...

Actually, does the 748 fly further or the A388?

Good News for Boeing!

it's weird they don't talk about it neither in boeing website, neither in CAL website: http://www.china-airlines.com/en/newsen/2006index.htm , http://www.boeing.com/commercial/news/index.html

That's because it's just speculation. No decision has been announced by either party, quite the contrary: China Airlines have categorically denied this rumor.

It was, as indicated in my previous post, a news topic on Luchtvaartnieuws.nl...

Usually Boeing will not announce orders on their own, they like to leave that to their customers who decide on the appropriate timing. And in this case there are political considerations to be factored in.

You will most likely see China airlines announce the order in the month or so.

Would have expected a bigger airline, most probably BA or Lufthansa to be the launch customer of the 748, but CAL works too :D

I hope its true, its important that the 748 programme wins more orders.

BA still have a few years to decide what to choose between a380 and 747-8... so they won't be lauch costumer.

this will be a major body blow for the A380 and A340

Post by fleabyte »

Major body blow. Leahy better sharpen his pencil to save this one.

and 7 more A340's getting yanked out of operation, short lifetime on those birds. Good luck unloading them on the resale market CAL.

Taiwan is in deep with the 747, now that Evergreen is handling the conversion of 3 and maybe as many as 5 747-400 to LCH.

A transit visit denial will not be enough to swing Taiwan to the A380 and the EU. The EU has done so little to support Taiwan for past 30 years, although France has given strong support in terms of selling them military hardware.

My bet is on China Airlines taking the 10 747-8, we shall see......

Boeing never discusses possible sales until after a contract or binding letter of intent is signed, for obvious reasons. In case a customer changes their mind for financial or political reasons, Boeing does not want to be embarrassed (“Don’t count your chickens until they hatch”). Also, Boeing prefers that the customer make the initial announcement so they can have the spotlight; Boeing is just happy with the sale.

Every time Boeing gets an order, it's all "major blow for Airbus..."
When Airbus sells a plane, the only thing you hear is "they sold it at cost/it's pollitical/..."

There's nothing wrong with having a favorite, but don't overdue...

[sarcasm="on"]
That's why there are rows of A340's parked in the desert...

Well a life of about 8 years is reasonable for an airliners to be in an airline.. They are ordering to replace it, meaning there will still be years until they will be replaced.

Yes, that is logical if these A340 are already in service 8 yaers, and will be in service another 4-6 years, that is long, but not as long as AA or UA drive their birds.

I consider it sport to pick on airsub, and admit it freely.

But to lose 10 passenger jumbos to a 40 year old 747 (I know re-designed etc) when the A380 has not sold a passenger airframe for a year is a body blow.
