According to local sources the aircraft was on final approach when the pilots momentarily lost sight of the runway due to intense rainfall. The A340 deviated from the approach path and eventually touched down off the side of the runway causing damage to undercarriage and auxiliary power unit. No person on board was injured in the incident.
