Post by SN30952 »

Japanese Kyodo announced:
Japan and the United States are considering constructing a giant runway on the sea off Iwakuni

The megafloat would be made of hollow metal boxes and have an estimated lifespan of 100 years. The megafloat, which wouldcost up to $4.5 billion, would be built about four km (2.5 miles) away from an existing U.S. marine base at Iwakuni.

The protoype of the "megafloat" was built years ago and after succesfull tests dismantled. Even the ILS was working fine.

I remember about this US navy project. it was considered to have a mega base with up to 10 000 soldiers on it. Currently, you have 3 000 to 4 000 people aboard an aircrafts carrier.

Nice to hear that apart from land there will be landings possible on water as well. But what worries me is that why are we investing in such ideas or projects when the latest generation of aircrafts are long haul and more capable of direct point to point flights.

Will there be an economic sense in such a project!
Aum Sweet Aum.
