This week, US diverted an Alitalia plane

Post by SN30952 »

Alitalia 618 en route from Milan to Boston was diverted to Bangor, Maine, today Tuesday May 17, because the name of a passenger on board matched that of a person on the US government’s no-fly list.

The bets are open: what european airline will it be next week?

Well, I guess I could copy and paste my reply from the Air France topic.

I can see that in England, where a lot of people are making bets, a new trend develops. "Place your bets now, ladies and gentleman, which airline heading towards the US will be the next diversion!!".

Let's see, we had Air France, we had KLM and now we have Alitalia. My bet is that Iberia is next, Lufthansa and British Airways (at least there goverments) are too politically connected to the US. Hmmm, or are it only Skyteam members who have the honor of being diverted?

The FBI questioned the man, who's nationality was not immediately known, but decided not to arrest him.

Canadian fighter jets escorted the flight through that country's air space, and two F-15 Eagles from Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod escorted it through US air space to Bangor.

They are taking the piss to be honest.

America is turning into a paranoid realm of stupidity. Big shame.

I chose Iberia because there were the bombings of the trains in spain and im sure that great Us intelligence agencies will find some sort of link or Anthrax in the onboard Paella Meal.

The rest of the world should divert Air Force one when it is airborne because of who it is carrying, Far more destructive then any other singular person.

Howdy,

Guys, understand that this government is paranoid! Look how it manipulates, or tries to manipulate the media. Except for a few newspapers like the New York Times and the Boston Globe, much of the media lets Bush and the clowns running this country to get away with their nonsense. When will Americans wake up!

By the way, if you can not tell, I come from the bluest of blue states!

Hey your country didn't have it towers bombed by terrorist who had nothing better to do than kill innocent people that day. You don't see Americans doing that. Its not paranoia is called being cautious.

First of all you can't be anti-Bush and start off with Howdy, your not a Texan. Bush is not a clown. He's doing a much better job than that Frenchman, John F Heinz Kerry, could have ever done.
I will give you some credit, the media is destroying this country. Its not being manipulated by the government, it manipulates itself. You want a good paper read the Drudge Report. You can find it on www.foxnews.com

Hi, we should not start a political discussion here about Bush vs. Kerry.

However, I wondered why (most) European countries have that position of acceptance for the weird rules of the US (like transmitting the information about visiting passengers, the diverting issue, the idiotic security check procedures ...). I am really surprised that resistance from European countries is very lo. So my idea would be that actually governments of European countries are pretty happy that someone is playing the "bad cop" first for all. For me coming from Germany I have the feeling that our secretary for internal security (aka Otto Schily) would like to have these rules too but does not have the power to realise them.

1 - Credit?
2 - www.foxnews.com
3 - Manipilation?
Which of these three make a team, you think, ryanvsnow?

Count on me @ Luchtzak to
a - relay the New York Times and the Boston Globe in LZ
b - to add more nonsense in these lines..

You both made my day, guys. Keep the spirit up.

Fox News!!!! Hillarious - lets all go out and buy the Daily Mail or the Telegraph as well shall we?

Back to the point....these idiots need to stop this. Alternatively we should stop and turn round all flights by Continental with the passenger names George Bash, Bish, Besh, Bysh - 'cos we all know the name of the biggest security risk!

Well, this comes straight from my reply in the Air France diversion topic:
I can see the US' point for safety, but in my humble opinion there are many other ways to gain that safety. One example is to send up a fighter escort and track the aircraft for suspicious movements, or to share those lists with all the airlines that are flying into the US. Then security forces could have questioned the man before the flight without bothering (and scaring) other passengers and creating extra costs for the airline.
I do believe that security behind the screens will be more effective then the current "let's divert them and find out that nothing is wrong" policy.
It seems that some of the people here are actually holding president Bush responsible for this diversions, but I wonder who really makes the decision to divert the aircraft. Or do some here really think that Bush is throwing darts at a chart with airlines to decide which airline will be diverted next.

I don;t think people here think Bush is directly responsible but he is the head of the government who's policies result in these diversions. Therefore he is the obvious target, would happily use Rumsfeld or Cheney instead though if you prefer!

Just my personal observation :

It is kinda strange that citizens from a nation that lost two towers are among the most disrespecting people when it comes to airport security !.

Especially its own military thinks it stands above a civilian and doesn't have to be searched, keep in mind that also bin Ladin was in the military !.

This is getting out of hand The Us Government (Not citizens) need to realise this planet is not theirs.

Yes, again another anti US topic, woooowwwww lets dig into my most negative resources to give some wise input

Good to see they keep on holding a tight security in the US and they really don't care what the rest of the world (read EU) thinks.
I'll bet the next one will be LH since the Germans really think their security is completely secure........it is not as we all know.

Please stop bashing on the US regulations, we were all shocked and emotional on that awful day and wished it would never happen again. At least there is one country trying to avoid that.......good move again!

The facts do prove that since September 11th 2001 there was no other terrorist attack on United States soil. Some may call the US regulations paranoid and exagerated, maybe they are, but at least they seem to work, what can't be said of some other countries in the Netherlands.

Hello there!

My cristal ball works well tonight  , I see many things happening:

-Next carrier to be diverted will be a European one (I voted LH).
-Next carrier to lose an airplane due to terrorist attack will be an American one (I will vote AA).

Perhaps you have a point here.

Sure! Oh, can you remember me the only one country who used the nuclear bomb (against a civilian target) whereas the war was already virtually won? :? :? :?

Yeah, fox is well known to be neutral as possible  ...

I agree, 6th and 9th of August 1945 were the worth days for humanity.

Why cant people have anti Us government views ... if you take the stance you dont want to be anti or pro and just dont care that is your view. If others are anti for certain reasons it is their opinion. Simple as that.

Or is this forbidden?

Btw Your towers went down yeah, Asia had the Tsunami and they get on with it .. thats life why dwell in the past forever.
