Matt,

Test-Achats/Aaankoop made a test of digital cameras in its September 2003 issue. I will look shortly and let you know.

Killerwhale,
In the article, they tested 18 digital cameras. Only one of them is in your list: HP Photosmart 850. And it does not have good results.

The best one in those tested is the Olympus C-5050, but it is expensive (950-1245 €). The best price/quality ratio goes to Nikon Coolpix 3100 (403-470 €) and Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 (389-442 €).

Matt,

Unfortunately, Testaankoop has only tested 3x optical zoom camera's in their latest test :( . It would be great to find a comparison between all these 10x zooms somewhere on the net.

Like you, I have been looking around for a good/the best affordable 10x optical zoom digital camera the last weeks myself, and I ended up with the same list as you plus the Toshiba PDR-M700 (already out) and the kodak 6490 (announced).

I was expecting a lot from the Fuji S5000, but this one gets only moderate user reviews :? (too much noise, too much JPEG compression, and longest shutter being limited to 2 secs max). The Olympus C750 is still too expensive (over 600 euro, and add to that the expensive Xd memory cards).

The kodak unfortunately has its own kind of battery pack (so not standard AA batteries) and I don't like that very much... The specs slook OK though.

I expect a lot from the Minolta Dimage Z1, announced for september. The specs look very good on this one, and it will probably be my choice if the first reviews and user experiences turn out to be OK.

If they don't, I might go for my actual favorite, the Toshiba M700, which has a fast lens, and has received pretty good reviews very recently on www.imaging-resource.com, and also on other review sites.

regards, and good luck in your quest for the best 10x optical zoom digital camera...

I have chosen for the Olympus C740. I ordered it, and will get in on wednesday. It had the best reviews, comments, and tests, for a very sharp price!

I have the Minolta Dimage Z1 (the same size as a package of sigaretts). At this moment the smallest digital camera in the world, and afcours im proud to be the owner. Sorry guys, i like to be spotting at BRU. But i live in Zele, thats 60 km's from BRU. To far for bus, to expensive for train.

same problem here. live in Deinze. Have no car. public transport takes 2 hours to get to BRU; 45 minutes by car -- so i hope next year i can get a job and buy a car.

BTW: i got the camera since yesterday and i must say i am impressed w/ its functionality and quality of the pics. Hope to go spotting next week with it.
