Yes but a second stop in JNB would make the entire trip a lot longer than the current two step flights. SN would then probably need a second plane for the same route as it would take more than 24 hours to do the flight. -> A lot of costs, and all that just for one destination. Instead they can now fill their plane with another destination which is nearby FIH and can make money as well. That's probably the reason behind.

Hi sn26567.
There is one problem is that today I think you need to be vacinated to transit in FIH.
You d'ont need yellow fever etc... for S.A.

@Andre
That was a nice way to fill the plane and make a profit, even if the second sector was not profitable.
Yes indeed I remember it also ...
All carriers at that time were stopping on the way to SA.
And did you observe that not so many pax were (dis)embarked ?
Nowadays a stop has become the exception...
And I would fear that a stop in kin for ex would rather be a hindrance to the route profitability because jnb is already a big demand.
Not quite so for cpt by the way where a stop (in lad for ex) would probably be justified ...
And it is a completely different story when the 2 destinations are very close one to the other adding the possibility to operate the return route directly in a loop (sometimes can be advisable, sometimes not depending on the pax expectancies). Because what counts very much is the expectancies of the passengers and the gway function you want to implement in bru.
But I stick to what I already said: snba should urgently invest in Africa on 1-day rotation flights (passing from 3 to 6 at least) before considering a SA link. This means adding 3 new A330 a/c to the fleet ... But in the present context, I am afraid not growing is ...shrinking :o(

One of the reasons that the (almost full) SN flights were losing money was the very high leasing costs of the MD11's of Citybird which were used at that time ... And by not attracting enough business pax (contrary to e.g. BA) ...

yes Danny, there you say something interesting. Despite the planes were full, they lost money. And that is what I mean with questionable managment. Who decided to pay so much to lease those MD-11's? Those people are responsable. It is their fault.
Together with my remarks with the BKK routing, remember that Sabena was flying to Madras? Come on, what was the profit there?

don't forget Air Namibia with the A340 replacement for the MD-11.
They do Frankfurt-Windhoek CPT and/or JNB
