Despite the rebuff of Star Alliance to Air India, bmi and Air India will begin codeshare service starting 24 August 2011. There is still some light at the end of the tunnel....

Re: Air India: "Jet Airways may join Star Alliance too"
what is the link between a codeshare between BD and AI and star alliance?
LX and AF codeshare but that doesn't mean one of them will swap alliance

According to officials in the Ministry of Civil Aviation a SkyTeam delegation, led by Managing Director Michael Wisbrun, has met Civil Aviation Secretary Nasim Zaidi last week and expressed interest in making the national carrier part of its alliance.
“We do not have any problems in joining SkyTeam and will consider its proposal seriously. But at the same time we are open to talks with Star Alliance if they want to restart a dialogue,” a senior ministry official said. Air India is unlikely to form any relationship until it unravels its ongoing financial problems, but all the alliances can see the potential.

Debt-ridden national carrier Air India does not have the funds to pay for the 27 Boeing 787s it has ordered, Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said Sept. 9, a day after the country’s nodal public auditing agency flayed the state-run airline’s hasty expansion plans.
Good luck to Skyteam if they accept them as a member...

This was already admitted before by the management of AI. They need to find money, fast, because they are planned to get their first 787 in de comming months (3th customer after ANA and JAL).sn26567 wrote:Debt-ridden national carrier Air India does not have the funds to pay for the 27 Boeing 787s it has ordered, Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said Sept. 9, a day after the country’s nodal public auditing agency flayed the state-run airline’s hasty expansion plans.

It took a long time before India took a decision, but now Star Alliance rejected Air India they could make their final decision = LH is not allowed to fly their A380 to Delhi... This decision was fully depending on the entry of AI into Star so the outcome was already known at the moment it was kown that AI wouldn't join Star.

Re: Air India: "Jet Airways may join Star Alliance too"
Fortunately for LH none of the current A380 operators is allowed to fly the A380 to Delhi or Mumbai (only BA will be able to fly the A380 to DEL). Given the fact that the current bilateral between India and Germany (or any other country) doesn't allow the A380, one can better say that India doesn't want to negotiate a new bilateral with Germany instead of not allowing LH to use the A380. And why would they? There is nothing to gain for India at the moment.MR_Boeing wrote:It took a long time before India took a decision, but now Star Alliance rejected Air India they could make their final decision = LH is not allowed to fly their A380 to Delhi... Re: Air India: "Jet Airways may join Star Alliance too"
It's just typicall India. They see LH as one of the responsibles for the rejection of AI by Star Alliance. Remember the ministry said they would "punish" LH and Star in a suitable way because of what happened with AI... this is one of India's punishments...LJ wrote: And why would they? When AI was still planned to join Star, the ministry officially confirmed that LH would only be allowed to fly with the A380 (to be precise, they would change the bilateral agreement with Germany so that LH could use the A380 to Delhi) if AI could join Star.
Re: Air India: "Jet Airways may join Star Alliance too"
No, not typically India. It's just business. Why would you give someone an advantage when you get nothing in return? It's not only directly aimed at LH, but it's just the usual bargaining between two countries. When Germany has something to offer, I wouldn't be surprised if suddenly LH can get access.... Why else do you think India was thinking about a new bilateral which would allow the A380?MR_Boeing wrote:It's just typicall India.

According to Indian press quoting India's civil aviation minister, Air India does not have the money to pay for the 27 Dreamliners ordered from Boeing.
AI's Board has decided to go ahead with the purchase. They need the fuel efficient planes in their attempt to turnaround the airline. But will they be able to pay upon delivery ?

The 787 would be a good aircraft for them, but if they don't change the complete company structure the 787 will not be the solution, maybe it will make it even worse as it's not really cheap to buy 27 787's. One thing is sure, if they do not pay, Boeing will not delivery.

Re: Air India: "Jet Airways may join Star Alliance too"
You already know India didn't want to adjust the bilateral agreement with Germany so that LH could use the A380 to Delhi after AI's Star entry was denied.
Apperently they don't think this is enough to punish LH. Now they want to impose sanctions on the landing rights for LX. (side note: I wonder if they even realise LX and AI have a codeshare agreement wich is now close to worthless)
The Indian Foreign Ministry wrote to the Swiss ambassy that they do not longer meet the legal requirements for service and their aircraft would no longer be allowed to land in India. They also treat to revoke the traffic rights from OS. "Suddenly" they see LX as German registred airline so they are not allowed to fly to India as all trafic rights between Germany and India area already used. But the only reall reason for this is Air India as the bilateral agreements with India were re-negotiated after the full take over of LX in 2006/2007. Back then everything was just fine, on the condition that AI could join Star.

If they think they can solve their problems like this... The LH group is by far the strongest partner of Air India, with or without Star Alliance. By taking decisions like this they are not (re)building a good relationship...
