Sky Europe will give up new routes

Post by szyszek »

Probably Sky Europe will give up its new routes from Warsaw in summer.

It will be routes to Amsterdam (currently available by end of March), and new to: Copenhagen, Nice and Manchester.
Also from Krakow to Nice.

Does this have anything to do with either the rearrangement of the summer schedule by the airport facilitator, or the plans to start using a former military airport north of Warsaw?

Probably not, as for the time being nobody actually wants to fly from Modlin (military airport's name), unless forced to do so e.g. by price rising at Warsaw Okecie airport.

How about Wizz, everything ok over there?

Article at SkyEurope.com:

SkyEurope allocates new capacity to Krakow instead of Warsaw
23.02.2005

SkyEurope Airlines, Central Europe’s first low cost low fare airline, will introduce four additional aircraft this summer to its current fleet of 13 aircraft, but will not allocate extra capacity to its Warsaw base as initially planned. Instead, it will double its capacity in Krakow by adding an additional aircraft and by opening new routes from Krakow to Barcelona and Manchester, while adding frequencies on most existing routes.

The main reason for this change is a disagreement with Warsaw Airport over commercial and operational issues:

 Warsaw Airport is building a new terminal and cannot guarantee overnight parking, related to that, major disruption are expected while the building work progresses this summer;
 Warsaw Airport intends to increase its passenger charges by 23% to pay for the new terminal which low cost carriers will not use [not approved by the CAA];
 Warsaw Airport has not confirmed all required slots allowing SkyEurope to operate from the lower cost Etiuda Terminal;
 Warsaw Airport is imposing severe financial penalties for flights landing after 22:00 local.

SkyEurope clearly informed Warsaw Airport during the last meeting with IATA and airlines representatives that the development of low cost airlines in Warsaw should follow the principles of win-win cooperation between carriers and airport. SkyEurope is not prepared to introduce new business to the airport by investing into new routes if the airport does not ensure a predictable business environment.

SkyEurope will thus operate the following destinations out of Poland this summer:

from Krakow to:

 Amsterdam
 Barcelona [New!]
 London Stansted
 Manchester [New!]
 Milan Bergamo
 Paris Orly
 Rome Fiumicino

from Warsaw to:

 Bratislava
 London Stansted
 Paris Orly
 Rome Fiumicino
 Vienna (with SkyShuttle)

Passengers booked on routes which will not be operated this summer will be offered the choice between a full refund, rebooking on other SkyEurope routes, or in certain cases alternative transportation. SkyEurope will inform its passengers about the changes within the time limits prescribed by the latest EC Regulation 261/2004.

SkyEurope remains committed to further grow its operation from its Warsaw base once the business environment for low cost carriers operating from the Etiuda Terminal in Warsaw will be clarified.

In the last 12 months, SkyEurope transported 1.1 million passengers of which 226 thousand from and to Poland, achieving an average load factor of 73%. In the summer season 2005, it will serve a total of 41 scheduled routes to 22 destinations in 14 countries, adding 10 new routes to SkyEurope’s network. During this period, SkyEurope will operate 14,943 flights with a total seat capacity of 1,664,544 available seats. The summer programme 2005 represents an 85% increase compared to the same period in 2004.

SkyEurope successfully entered its fourth year of operation and is established at bases in Vienna-Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow and Warsaw. The company is funded by a consortium of financial investors including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, ABN-Amro Bank, the European Investment Fund and Bank Austria Creditanstalt.

Great, now we're left without a low-cost connection between warsaw and the netherlands. Maybe skyeurope could cook up some organized bus/whatever transport between warsaw and cracow?

A bit out of topic, but don't even try to use bus or other road transport from Cracow to Warsaw. You have efficient and fast trains between those cities. http://www.intercity.com.pl/en/main

Some information about those trains:

Cost of the line between Warsaw and Cracow is 80 PLN (20 €)...
The trip takes you 2 houres and 45 minutes...
During the day there are connections every 2 houres...
You can make reservation via the internet...

Only 1 thing to watch out with: on this site you have an english version too, but do not make your reservation in english, make it in polish !
If you make your reservation in english you won't get a confirmation e-mail back ! For some reason it doesn't work via the english site.

So: you make the reservation on the polish version of the site: you print the confirmation-mail ; you take your train ; when they ask for your ticket you give him the paper and pay the price you have to pay... (80 PLN = normal price : 33% reduction for people younger than 26)

Bus connection: about 4-5 hours travelling for almost the same price (not a good idea)

Internet is great. Look here:
http://www.lotnisko-balice.pl/eng/jak_dojechac.asp
And they are going to refurbish an old rail track to the airport, too.
By the way, the bus to the Central Railway Station costs... € 0,60 only! :P

@ Earthman:

here's another possibility:
3 hours with car and you are in Charleroi, i know 3 hours can be called a lot, but the travelling time between Cracow and Wawa is even more.

I don't have a car of my own, I would need to get to Charleroi by train if I were going myself.

I could also go to Dusseldorf or Cologne, it's about the same distance.

But this whole thing is not an issue for me anyway, I fly KLM on that route, it allows me to fly to WAW after work, and to fly back in the morning back to work.

The issue is my girlfriend, who lives in Warsaw. If she flies to AMS with SkyEurope somewhere in the middle of the day, I can get to the airport, pick her up, and get back to work in a rather short time. To drive three hours one way during the week is not really an option here. For her, flying a regular airline is not an option, she would take the bus instead. (20+ hours... aargh)

Instead of taking the train you can actually take the Polski Express bus from Warsaw straight to the Balice airport.

Okay, I just checked SkyEurope's schedule from Krakow: the flight to Amsterdam leaves at 6:30am, good luck getting there on time from Warsaw...

I realy feel bad for you, i'm kind of in the same situation...

My girlfriend lives in Mielec... it's 4 hours away from Warsaw and 3 hours away from Cracow...

Advise for everyone: never start a 'long distance relationship'... It hurts.... :?

With the 10 new members in Europe, we saw on Brussels airport an increase of passengers between the capital of Europe and East-Europe. SN Brussels and the national carriers of these countries are flying a lot on Brussels. But we saw no LCC in Brussels like SkyEurope.

This airline is increasing it's destinations at a high level. Prices are very, very low.

Would somebody know if this airline had plans to come to Brussels?
Or could they choose Charleroi to have a competition with Wizz Air?
