Re: National strike in Belgium on 13 February 2019
^^ Fair points. Let me rephrase: if people working in the Belgian aviation sector see the upside of having a succesfull national carrier they shouldn’t go on strike for vague reasons that have nothing to do with their employer.

Belgium no longer has a national carrier. Neither has it had a succesful carrier, for many years now.having a succesfull national carrier
Re: National strike in Belgium on 13 February 2019
Off topic... The excuse for this strike are the failed negotiations in the PRIVATE sector (actually the Unions left the negotiations) and who goes mainly on strike? The PUBLIC sector.
On topic... Mr. Descheemaeker, CEO of Brussels Airport, complains in the press that his company (and the rest of the economy) will loose a lot of money because of the strike. Not a word about the passengers who's plans are disrupted. We know where his thoughts are… not with his passengers. Probably also the reason I stood in line at security for 45min last Tuesday evening with only 2 scanning stations open. I made my flight, but couldn't have dinner at the Amo restaurant... one of Mr. Descheemaekers REAL customers… and where his thoughts probably are.
Welcome to my wonderful surreal country Belgium!

P.S. Congratulations to SN, TUI... for at least organizing things as good as you can and avoiding chaos in 2 days.

Meanwhile TUI manages to operate a full schedule from alternate airports.RoMax wrote: ↑08 Feb 2019, 19:48SN staff will not strike (except maybe a few lost exceptions), the cancelations are because basically 'everyone else' is expected to strike with medium to very heavy impact expected (there are even talks about the entrance road to the airport being blocked and BRU itself is asking everyone to replan their travel arrangements).
When part of the flights was still planned, SN asked its staff for volunteers to help at the airport with all sorts of stuff from informing pax to loading luggage (one of the main reasons why even an accounting guy or whatever at B.house have a badge with airside access even though they don't need it for their job, is to be able to help in situations like that), all the required slots for volunteers were filled in no time and with buffers. I thinks that's far from a strike mentality! This is just force majeure and I'm sure pax will be more happy with their travel plans adapted today vs being uncertain about whatever might happen with the very likely consequence of chaos at the airport.
Im sorry but cancelling everything is the easy option
Re: National strike in Belgium on 13 February 2019
The CEO of Brussels Airport is Arnaud Feist. Mr Descheemaeker is the politically appointed Chairman of the Board. And yes, his political views may differ from those of the real manager of the airport. But he is (fortunately) not in charge of the day-to-day operation of the airport.

I congratulate TUI with this kind of operations, they are bringing holiday-goers and other passengers to their destination without much disturbance and on the same day.
I can also understand Brussels Airlines with their decision to cancel flights, they can rely on a bigger network to reroute and rebook passengers the day before or the day after. Besides, this airline relies more on business related traffic than TUI.
Re: National strike in Belgium on 13 February 2019
I was discussing with a Brussels Airlines spokesperson when the decision to cancel ALL the flights was taken. She said to me that it is easier for TUI, which has bases in neighbouring countries, to relocate its flights. Brussels Airlines has only one base, and when there is such an uncertainty about who will or will not be on strike at the airport of that base, the best way to have no uncertainty is to cancel every flight long enough in advance to allow all the concerned passengers to make alternative plans.

Hello, Ryanair ??
Silence is NOT golden ! Until this moment not one single word of information has been diffused.

Maybe the alternative plans like when Brussels was shut down on 22 March 2016 was too expensive, without including the fleet based in Belgium outside Brussels to base them in foreign countries...

The official Charleroi Airport knows less: Due to a major national strike on February 13, operations and access at the airport may be deeply affected. We advise all passengers to contact their airline and visit the websites of the airlines to get info about flight status.
Re: National strike in Belgium on 13 February 2019
I think it's a bit ridiculous...
My flight PS148 is still scheduled 13/02 from BRU @05:50 in the morning. I have no idea if I should order parking for the +10 days I'm gone. I can just imagine: order long term parking, going there, flight is cancelled ... I have to drive out from the parking then which makes the ticket invalid.
Those stupid vakbonden are causing me so much personal stress and now I should gamble with a ~€120 parking ticket...

Can't you ask Ukraine International for a rebooking to day -1 or +1, to be honest I don't think there will be much flying anyway ....Porkchop wrote: ↑11 Feb 2019, 21:18 I think it's a bit ridiculous...
