Danish carrier Sun-Air - operating mainly as a British Airways franchisee - is exiting the London City to Hamburg market as of May 8th. BA will start flying this route themselves, mostly to raise capacity beyond what Sun-Air could provide with the Dornier 328 jets/props they use between HAM and LCY.
According to Sun-Air commercial director Kristian Tvergaard - as quoted by CHECK-IN.dk - the company is planning to replace Hamburg with a new destination from London City but "isn't quite ready yet".
Could Sun-Air be so brave to enter the Antwerp to London City market? Personally, I don't see ANR the most obvious choice for a new route from LCY, but I wouldn't complete dismiss the idea either. If only because:
- Antwerp will soon be the only destination not served by Cityjet's own planes and the VLM contract will then be in place just to continue flying this route. Sun-Air might be counting on WX to give it up rather than to fight the competition.
- VLM itself is a much smaller partner to Antwerp Airport than it was a year ago. The 'allure' of adding BA-flights to the network could be a bigger motivator than the fear of alienating VLM.
- Although the list is short, the ANR-LCY flight could connect with a few UK routes out of London City.
- Sun-Air can be pretty sure BA will never 'steal' this route from them.
- With 32 seats, the Dornier is probably the right size for this kind of operation.
- As the competition between Sun-Air and Brussels Airlines on the Brussels to Billund route is proving, there might very well be room for two operators on such a niche route anyway. Certainly given the fact that Sun-Air seems to have a fiercely loyal client base driven partly by BA frequent flyer loyalty.
Anyway, it's just a thought experiment at this point so my apologies if this post was somewhat light on 'hard' news. But it sure is nice to play armchair CEO from time to time

I agree Sun-Air would have a hard time providing enough capacity to serve the route by themselves. But as a way to test the waters, steal away some passengers that VLM has to turn away, 32 seats is probably just about perfect. There is indeed a need for more capacity at peak times for flights between ANR and LCY. This week fe is very busy with a lot of fully booked flights and others well above 80% LF.
I expect Cityjet to stop the VLM wetlease from next Winter and start operating the RJ85 from ANR. Possibly just 2 daily. This would allow them to increase peak time seats and keep capacity at almost the same level. Also reduce landing charges in LCY due to bigger airplanes at reduced frequencies. they have been reducing frequencies in recent years to increase average loads. This winter around 70% LF, up from less than 60% last Summer.
The only problem I see for them is having an airplane sitting in ANR all day doing nothing. So they might have to think about opening some other off peak routes to keep the plane busy. Why not open Cork (3 or 4 weekly), Toulon (2 weekly Summer), Avignon (1 weekly Summer), ...

A VLM Fokker 50 with only 32 pax offers more nett profit then a Sun Air Dornier 328 with 32 pax (with the tickets sold at the same price). VLM's low lease costs and today's fuel prices make the difference.

I have no reason to doubt that, but let's not simply assume that Sun-Air will be forced to sell tickets at the same price. Passengers on scheduled flights: 15720
Passengers on specific routes:
Alicante (Jetairfly): 2553 (98,19 average)
Barcelona (Jetairfly):1912 (79,67)
Malaga (Jetairfly): 1513 (94,56)
Birmingham (FlyVLM): 286 (11)
London City (Cityjet): 5085 (33,9)
Southampton (FlyVLM): 456 (13,41)
No info for other routes to Geneva, Berlin, Freidrichshafen, Hamburg and Rome.
Jetairfly is adding capacity all the time for the Easter holidays. They added extra flights to Alicante (up to 5 weekly), Malaga (up to 4 weekly) and Nador. One of the extra Alicante flights is almost sold out in just 3 weeks. Antwerp seems to work very well for them.
Flew myself to Rome last weekend. Great experience in ANR, so easy... less so in Rome (lot of time for baggage to arrive). Loads about 60 passengers ANR to FCO and 70 on the way back. Passengers on the flights very mixed: Belgians, Dutch, several Italians ... Lot of citytrippers (like me this weekend), but on Monday also several business people on the flight to ANR.
To me it seems that Jetairfly has found a good niche in ANR. For sure they will be able to grow their business there without being afraid of big lowcost airlines setting up in ANR as well. Hopefully we will see more than 1 E190 based in ANR in future, but the change at the airport is huge in just one year.

Due to the increased traffic the Antwerp airport car parkings are full.Because of the exceptional circumstances the maximum capacity of our parking space has been reached today. We're requesting all passengers not to use their own car to come to the airport but either use public transportation or have friends/family drive them to the airport.
