A Piper Malibu bound for Zwartberg crashed soon after take-off from Geneva, this afternoon. Possibly due to an engine breakdown. Pilot alone on board, killed.

It doesn't sound or look like engine failure to me. It looks like he entered a spin as soon as he banked his wings, suggesting that he was either stalled or had some kind of structural/control surface failure.
The poor soul didn't feel any pain.

A reminder that GA isn't without risks and things can happen overwhelmingly fast.

Vendredi, vers midi, un petit avion de tourisme s'est écrasé sur la commune de Bernex, à proximité de Sézenove. Il s'agit d'un Piper Malibu immatriculé aux Etats-Unis, avec seul le pilote à bord. A 11h57, l'appareil a décollé de la piste 23 de l'aéroport international de Genève, à destination de Zwartberg, en Belgique. Six minutes plus tard, pour une raison encore inconnue, il a piqué du nez et s'est abîmé dans un champ, à la route de Laconnex.

Took off at 11.57 from runway 23 at GVA, crashed six minutes later at Bernez, near Sézenove.

Voor de piloot kwam alle hulp te laat. Hij was op slag dood. Volgens lokale media gaat het om een 59-jarige man. Meer details over zijn identiteit zijn niet bekend. Volgens Buitenlandse Zaken in Brussel is de piloot geen Belg.
