South African Airways in trouble

Post by Kabila »

Seems like SAA is struggling to stay afloat... the government has just given them a loan to keep operations going.

The CEO, 2 general managers, the chairwoman and 7 members of the board have promptly resigned.

Under these circumstances, we won't see SAA in BRU pretty soon, despite some optimism in other posts.

The once glorious SAA, which used to fly to all major cities in Europe, is no more what it used to be. I suspect that EK (with 6 daily DXB - South Africa rotations) is trashing the market an lowering the yields, together with QR and EY.

I hope that this nice airline will not disappear.

"The problems South Africa experienced with Apartheid still permeate the airline. In the bad old days Whites were promoted and now the airline favours non-Whites. Senior management is stacked with people with the right political connections to the ruling ANC regime while highly qualified White candidates for jobs will be bypassed for darker applicants. The airlines current CEO Siza Mzimela and her predecessor have been accused by South Africa’s Communication Workers Union of nepotism and corruption. Lazy managers in the company behave as if they have inherited a job-for-life and make some extremely poor quality decisions. The company is management top heavy with deadwood in need of a good pruning. Middle managers and those fronting passengers are typically much better than their bosses."

SAA cuts Kigali (for the second time and code share with RwandAir will resume on the daily service), Bujumbura, Buenos Aires. Mumbai could be cut, cause SAA not making profits on India route. Bejing opened last years, is also on the list, but SA Governement put pressure to keep the route.

The long haul network will be very poor :( . Very bad management since early 2000s, and i feel that the situation became worst, since 2004, when the airline joined Star Alliance

However the airline plans to add more flights to some destinations such as Dar Es Salaam, Luanda, Port Louis and plans to open a hub in West Africa (planned since many years....)
