South of East Germany tourism...

The south of former East Germany ( Leipzig and Dresden ) is not well served by air from Brussels. As far as I know you still need to catch 2 planes to get there, or rent a car from Berlin and drive 1.5 hours .
Ryanair "serves" Altenburg from Stansted. But don't do that or you end up in the middle of a pine forrest.

Not exactly: south of Leipzig and Dresden is the natural border between Germany and the Czech republic: the Erzgebirge mountain range.

It is a very beautiful area, but during winter time it can be very nasty. I experienced that in the low lands it was just rainy, but 10 km further on the Czech border crossing you needed to install tyre chains !
But I do agree that most of the area north of Dresden and Leipzig is one boring flat area.

OK, my memory told me that this beautiful area of Erzgebirge, Vogtland and so on does not start directly south of Leipzig, but rather further down south-east of Chemnitz, Zwickau, Plauen, Hof, etcetera. But having been raised in West Germany my geographic knowledge about the more eastern parts of the country (unfortunately) is not that perfect ...

But when you are at Altenburg, you are much closer to it.
Just meaning: yes, most of former ast Germany is a dull landscape with pine forrests and an occasional hill of mining debris.

don't know why this item was renamed as tourism. I have not been there as a tourist. I was - I don't recall exactly - 15-20 times in that region for my work. By air to Dresden or Leipzig or Berlin , and than further south, for example to Freiberg.

But I understand we ( OK, I ) wandered off the track.

Reality is that the south of Eastern Germany is not well served by aviation. This is not only my "complaint" as a foreigner. But Germans as well complain about the bad connections.
There is a lot of manufacturing industry ( a lot is automotive ) in this region, going from Erfurt up to the Polish border.

Here they manufacture about 25% of European automotive radiators.
Seems that very few members have visited this area. It confirms that this region is badly served by aviation
