Spanair plane skids off runway in Madrid, Barajas

Post by euroflyer »

International Media (bbc.co.uk, n-tv.de and others) report a plane has skidded off a runway in Madrid. It is reported to be a Spanair plane, no further details so far available. Anybody with more news?

CNN reports it was Spanair flight 5022, that there is a column of smoke, and that injuries are feared.

Yes, but that seems not to be logical as - according to flightstats.com - JK 5022 has left Madrid for Las Palmas already on 1h05pm, so more than 2 hours ago??

OK, maybe the times on flightstats.com are in GMT and not in local time? Than it could fit ...

To be precies, the Polish Gazeta Wyborcza reported that El Mundo reported that. And something about the left engine falling off and catching fire.

SN3727 bound for Madrid took off from BRU at 14:38 and is returning to BRU, listed twice as departed to BRU and canceled to MAD. Hope everyone is fine in MAD.

Bizarre since one reads that MAD remains open for landing...

Yes, it might remain open for landings, but than Brussels Airlines has a plane and a crew in Madrid which might not be able to take off again and the plane will be missing for other flights later tonight or tomorrow morning, which all together could become somewhat expensive. Plus somebody probably had to take a decision within minutes here.

Hope everybody will be fine in MAD, that is certainly more important now indeed!

La Libre claims at least 50 people died but the article is very vague.

Text pages from TVE (Spanish tv) mention 20 dead, 20 injured, while their live broadcasting mentions 7 dead.

TVE also reports MAD is now closed because its fire brigade is at the crash site.

There is still smoke coming from the crash site - but that could also be from the dry grass there. Pictures on TVE indeed show that grassland also took fire.

edit 16h35 : Spanish TVE now mentions 40 fatalities and many injured.

El Mundo is now stating the number of deaths can rise above 100 in their latest update concerning the accident.

The also say that only 21 people are at this moment evacuated from the burning plane and that those are in critical condition.
