Cancellations and diversions at Belgian airports due to fog

Post by sn26567 »

Today 11 October many flights to/from Belgian airports were delayed, cancelled or diverted due to heavy fog.

For Brussels you can find information in our Belgium spottting forum: bru-11-10-07-t23385.html. The Brussels Airport website went to a simplified 'very busy' mode.

At Charleroi outbound flights were cancelled and did not resume before 11:00. Two incoming flights were re-routed to Liège. See also the Ryanair news release: http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/notices. ... _11_Oct-GB

Ostend Airport was also closed and flights did resume before 10:15.

Liège Airport was not affected by the fog, thanks to its ILS III equipment.

Antwerp also cancelled a few flights.

9W hub

Post by BrightCedars »

A friend of mine landed 1h later on the OK flight from PRG.

I've noticed that some flights got diverted, notably some 9W flights. Does anybody know if they diverted all their flights to an alternate and had shuttles taking O/D passengers to/from BRU?

Today there was only 1 diverted 9W-flight. Inbound EWR went to AMS and then came a couple of hours later to BRU with pax.
Same thing with the HU flight.

Perhaps you could have raised your (interesting) question in a less judgmental manner by omitting the word "stupid".

e.g. Why did the 9W captain decide to opt for AMS as today's diversion airport rather than LGG, which may not have been affected by fog this morning and which is obviously closer to BRU in terms of flying or road distance?

I have a feeling that the decision of the captain may have been less "stupid" than you may have suggested.

EHAM/AMS had a pretty good weather yesterday morning (7 km VIS) but EBLG/LGG was very foggy (about 150 m RVR and ceiling 0 ft).
Even in CATIII operations you have to see something.

note that for cat III landings, there are 3 requirements
- crew (both cpt and fo) need to be "released"
- a/c landings equipment must be ok
- airport landing equipments must be working

It has nothing to do with VIP arrivals or anything of that kind. Just operational facts are considered. This is called company policy and procedures.

Sorry but the four outbound 6.30 am flights were not cancelled. The cancelled flights were the ones that could not land in Charleroi in the morning. It is always like that. The 4 based airplanes can take off but no plane can land. I always choose a non inbound morning flight so that I am sure it is not cancelled.
