Dear members,
we have evaluated the website to prevent spam showing up on the forums, these are the results:
problem: bots register an account (without activating) but leave spam url in the account. Memberlist becomes urlfarm.
action: from now on the webteam will activate the account, in maximum 24 hours your account will be active.
problem: +-200 accounts in the forums with urls to spam, warez, porn, medication, etc...
action: cleaned up memberlist
problem: spam posted in the forums
action: ASAP removal of spam and nickname + ban of the IP
Please leave comments + feedback on this matter if you like.
DO NOT REPLY IN A SPAM TOPIC
Are you using phpbb ?
I'd suggest to maybe search for another forum, like SMF .
I had the same problem a month ago and changed over from phpbb to smf with no problem. Off course, the luchtzak forum is much bigger than mine.
But since I changed over I haven't had a single url-porn-spam-user, although they're starting now on my coppermine gallery by spamming with picture comments...

www.phpbb.com it is indeed, I don't consider changing to a new forum but I am waiting for http://area51.phpbb.com
Re: Action against spam on www.luchtzak.be
I have found an easy way to stop bots registering a fake account, new members will receive an e-mail in their mailbox with a url to activate their account, just like beforeluchtzak wrote: problem: bots register an account (without activating) but leave spam url in the account. Hey,
Some spambots are advanced enough to be able to receive and process the activation mails...
Search for the phpBB "myVIPcode" mod. I installed it on a phpBB forum and no more spam...
Also a lot of info here: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=427852
Kind regards,
Sebastian

I think the best to do is to install a mod (available at the phpbb website, as I see it is a phpbb forum...) to prevent automated spamtopics. I did the same on my forum, and until now, I do not get any spam...
@Bruspotter: If you see a topic talking about (free) medication, porn, illegal software, etc (mainly with links, and mostly unlogic topicnames - only some keywords) you can be sure it is spam.... also check the usernames... sometimes they do just not look like someone did choose it him/herself

I'm working for an other website too and over there we have created a custom login and 'new member' page, so bots are no longer able to create new members and to post spam.Pinguin wrote:I think the best to do is to install a mod (available at the phpbb website, as I see it is a phpbb forum...) to prevent automated spamtopics. Hello,
I maintain 2 phpBB fora and I prevented bot registration by applying a simple modification to the source.
Users wanting to register have to answer a very simple question that can only be answered by humans. All humans know the answer to this simple question, but bots don't.
Very effective, and only a very small modification easy to implement.
Kind regards,
Sebastian
