Boeing may be a lot further along in development plans for the next 737, than may have been realized:

Boeing adds to pressure on Airbus
There are no strangers in the world, just friends we have yet to meet.
A twin asile 737, it would completely fill the gap between the current 737 and the 787... I thought this is what Airbus might do to fill the gap between the A320 and the A350XWB because that gap is way larger, and given that the XWB is capable of what it says it is, if the upper end of the A320 replacement can do A332 range and payload, who will be the winner about 15 years or so? Will Boeing be going full steam with BOTH the 737 replacement AND a 777 replacement at the same time?
Both manufacturers have quoted several times it only makes sens to offer a new family of aircraft, once the engine technology has managed to offer a 20 % more efficient system. That is currently not the case .The sole use of carbon-fiber fuselage and wings does not -in itself - provide enough fuel-efficiency to jump the line.
Boeing could introduce new 737 family that has a wider cabin than classic or next generation 737's. Although there is no concept yet, I bet the airlines that are talking with Boeing about a new 737 will ask for a bit of a wider cabin than the current designs. Second, the most interesting part of what I read and something that CX touched on was a twin-isle 737. Filling the gap between the 739 and 788 would be beneficial to Boeing seeing that a lot of 767 and 757 will be replaced in the next few years. Airbus might do the same with the A32X.

Ehm, almost like Little Boy and Fat Man from the Manhattan Project. But I'm sure that was intentional.http://tinyurl.com/2act4v wrote:The Times understands that two early prototypes have been drawn up: a wider, twin-aisle version and a shorter, single-aisle jet. These have been dubbed Fat Boy and Little Boy.

I don't see how this is being 'much further along in development plans than thought'. They're just starting to consult airlines, and they say themselves that they don't even have a concept yet. From what I'm reading here, we're still years away from a launch. And Airbus is also known to be studying an A320 replacement.

JAL has 13 ordered. ANA 30. Now, think about shrinking it (shorter fuselage) same wing. Better range, smaller PAX load and you have a 757-300!OO-TUC wrote:Will 737 fatboy eliminates the 787-3? As far as i know no airline ordered the 787-3 yet and with a next gen 737 widebody coming it seems that it will never come into production.
The 787-3 was created for ANA and JAL, they have a unique requirement that others may not from the lack of orders (or its better to have the option for longer range, and just put less fuel if you don't need to go that far).
Very interesting to see what develops. Boeing is getting very very good at mix and match.
Fatboy is starting to look like a shrunken 767, assuming it is twin aisle and 7 seats. Certainly one of the most comfortable economy layouts ever.
Can anyone imagine a 100 ft. long 767?
I think Boeing will come up with a layout very different to what we are used to seeing.
As the only new engine on the horizon is the geared fan P & W, would not be surprised to see the engines going back to the tail, to allow a nice clean wing. Might even see a Warthog(A10) type of tail or even a Vee tail.
Cheers
