Qatar Airways resumes direct flights to Beirut today.

Post by SN30952 »

Qatar Airways says it will resume direct flights to Beirut on Monday despite a blockade by Israel.
(I guess this will be a newsitem, in tonight's TV Journals)

Qatar Airways Flight 422 will arrive in Beirut* at 1530 local time (1230GMT) on Monday after a three-hour journey from Doha.

"Qatar Airways will become the first international carrier to make a commercial flight into Beirut since the war ended," a Qatar Airways spokeswoman said.

Middel East Airlines and Royal Jordanian are the only two other companies which have been authorised to operate commercial flights to Beirut via Amman since the blockade.

*Israel bombed runways at Beirut international airport at the beginning of the conflict. United Nations resolution called for the blockade to be lifted.

British Mediterranean Airways resumed commercial passenger flights to Beirut on Wednesday, becoming the first Western carrier to break Israel's air blockade of Lebanon.

The flight originated at London's Heathrow, the Airbus-320 landed at Beirut airport at 9:30 p.m. carrying some 67 passengers, 27 of whom disembarked while the rest continued to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BMED was established in 1994 by a group of private investors under the chairmanship of Lord Hesketh as a limited company. With a single A320, the airline flew five a week between London and Beirut, the Lebanese capital.
The following year, Des Hetherington, formerly with Kenya Airways and British Airways, was appointed as Chief Executive.

BMED flies A320-200 & A321-200's and became a franchise partner of British Airways and therefor a oneworld affiliate member.
British Airways withdrew its services to Beirut, Damascus and Amman, leaving BMED to be the sole British carrier serving these routes.

The air blockade is going to be very difficult for Israel to maintain. They have already lost the PR war with the attack on Lebanon, lost the battle with Hezbollah and made their big brother and friends look rather stupid. Now imagine what would happen if they shot down a civilian airliner defying this farcical blockade......another PR disaster. The airlines will start flooding back in their droves soon......

There could only be one the first

Post by SN30952 »

This must the 10th airline saying they are the firts in again...:
Kuwait Airways is the first airline to land in Beirut

There could only be one the first, it was Qatar's. What AiR France continued telling, they weren't, nor were all the others.

It must be important for the image (building) of those airlines to give the message they wer the first, so much they are prepared to lie about....
