Mexico selects Sukhoi Su-27

Post by ElcoB »

The Mexican navy has selected Sukhoi’s Su-27 over the Saab/BAE Systems Gripen to equip its first air defence unit.

Head of the service Adm Armando Sánchez Moreno says the new fleet of 10 fighters will enable the navy to carry out “strategic surveillance” over key areas of Mexico’s coastline.

Preliminary selection work was initiated in early 2005, and the navy is now entering into contract negotiations with Russia’s Rosboronexport agency for the purchase of eight single-seat Su-27s and two Su-27UB two-seat trainers. Local sources indicate that the entire package – which also includes spare parts, tools and personnel training – is worth slightly over $410 million.

It's a beautiful machine. Saw it do its tricks at Le Bourget in 1990 (or was it 91?) and just a few weeks ago, the Russian Knights performed in Hunan Province to mark the start of the Year of Russia in China. One team member seemed out of place selling the official T-shirt and other memorabilia before the aerobatics though.

@jan olieslagers: Let's not start with some sort of language/translation topic again like in the Jordan-Belgian topic. I know it can be bothering if there are spelling mistakes but not everyone is perfect.
@VG: maybey you should pay more attention to your posts.

greetings, Pietn

I eagerly await the day that machine translation gets so good, that everybody can post on a forum in their native language, and everybody gets to read all posts translated into their native language.

That would be almsot as good as sticking a little fish in your ear. ;-)

During the Eritrean-Ethiopian War Ethiopian Su-27s flown by Russian pilots shot down four Eritrean MiG-29s.. Ethiopian Su-27s flew many strike missions against the Eritrean ground forces, using unguided rockets and "dumb" bombs, and also escorted almost all MiG-23 deep strikes into Eritrea.

link to some nice reading about these EAF forces.

..... so is this a REAL war situations enough, you think ??.
