AMS 08/04/2006

Post by Yaroslav »

Hi all!

I know, I wasn't the first to go to AMS this week. But I had a lot of fun and it's just the second time that I'm coming to AMS for spotting.
When I arrived to the Schiphol railway station at 11:22 there was a heavy rain, so I was a bit disappointed. But finally after a short stop at the "World Of Wings" shop (where I bought EuroJP, a really very useful thing), when I went to the observation deck the rain was practically finished and in 1 hour we started to have a bit of sun coming from the clouds.
After having a lunch, I decided to try to go to the Kaagbaan spot (runway 06/24) by bus. Thanks to two other spotters I didn't miss my bus stop and after 20 minutes of walking I arrived there. The runways 18L and 24 were used for takeoffs. I should say that this spot is excellent especially when you get some Martinair Cargo MD-11's taxing just in front of you. Also I should say "Bravo, dutch guys" for the idea about a small channel instead of a fence. We should do the same in Brussels :D.
Then I came back to the airport, went again for a half-hour on the observation deck, but the airport looked already empty compared to the morning. I took my train back to Brussels at 17:40 (nearly missed it :?).
Conclusion: 6 hours of spotting, 6 hours of fun and I should come to AMS more often :D.

I've tried to log as many aircraft as I could. The result is 85:

Your pics look very good, Yaroslav ! Apparently you were lucky to see the special colored Martinair MD-11. Last wednesday I didn't get lucky, but I am hoping I will be next monday ( yes, I'm going back allready  )

Keep up the good work !

Corection, 3 types. Since a few months they also fly A330-200

Image

Years back they flew to AMS only with DC-10's. As you probably know, the DC-10's arent amoungst the youngest anymore and needed replacement. So Northwest ordered the A330-300 and A330-200. So every time they get a new A330 from the Airbus factory, they put it into service replacing a DC-10. Years back you could go to AMS and see up to 10 NW DC-10's. Nowaday's there are only 4 left ... Eventually, the NW DC-10 will disappear from our sights ...

Don't forget they also used the 747 as well (both -200 and -400). We even get the NW Cargo 747-200F in november, when the Beaujolais wines are ready for consumption.

But as said before, for us SPL spotters it's easy to get the complete NW fleet in the books (except the 747). For me NW is just as boring as all the KLM, Martinair and Transavia

Indeed, now that you mention it, it comes back to me !

I wouldn't say KLM and Transavia are boring. Maybe if you go every dayn, than I can understand you. But when you don't go more than 10 times / year, you can't say it's boring, cause there is always some KLM flying out there you don't have yet. Same for Transavia. The change in colorscheme of both airlines also makes it nicer tyo go as you will see old and new colors.

Hell, I dare to even say that SN Brussels Airlines isn't boring. Look at their lastest Avro-paints, like the Asterix Avro, Obelix Avro and now the Atomium Avro.

"Boring" is only what you make of it yourself ... I, for instance, would always try to make a better image of a plane I allready have. This way you stay busy and don't get bored. I went to AMS last wednesday and I am allready going back next monday. I now allready know that I wont be bored any second of that day !

Anyways, just my opinion.
