MK Airlines gets fuel via port of Ostend

Post by RadarContact »

Due to the high fuel prices MK Airlines will start shipping its fuel via the harbour of Ostend instead of buying it at the airport. The cargo airline, Ostend Airport and the port of Ostend will sign an agreement to accomodate a terrain at the harbour to stock the kerosine brought in by ships. Lorries will transport the fuel to the airport. By saving money this way MKA could be able to expand its operations at Ostend Airport.

Seems like Ostend is thightening its bonds with its biggest client. Of course Wiloo isn't pleased. They've already compared this news with the Francorchamps story.

What are the regular distribution channels to provide OST with kerosine?

Is there an underground pipeline?

How do the fuel companies at OST respond to this surprising development?

How many fuel trucks would be shuttling on a daily basis between the seaport and the airport? 1 truck per aircraft?

Is this service really exclusively for MK Airlines or can other airlines (like SV or MS) also benefit from this?

1 truck per aircraft?

average fuel consumption b747 +- 11000kg/hour flightime

max gross wgt of a truck on Belgian public road = 44000kg

you don't have to be a math wizard to figure out that one truck/airraft will not be enough

The regular distribution at this time is by truck comming from Zeebrugge, but I am not sure of that. There sure is NO underground pipeline !

How do fuelcompanies react at EBOS ? well, first of all, there is only 1 fuel company : SkyTanking. And as far as I heard, they are pleased with the idea, because this arrangement would not be for MK exclusively, but for all airport clients. The idea came from MK and the airport in order to lower the average fuelprice at EBOS.

How many trucks come to EBOS every day ... good question. If you keep in mind you need 3 full fueltrucks to fill a single 747 ... you do the math.

Anyway, a good project for EBOS and it's clients.

I believe the fuel is trucked from the harbour of Dunkerque to Ostend (at least in the past it was...)

There's a press release by the port of Ostend and MK Airlines. You'll find it by clicking the link.

Apparently Ostend airport, the harbour and MKA will work together to develop the airport as a continental cargo hub. In 2006 MKA will use the new warehouse at the new apron 1 as its European distribution centre. In the future the existing fleet will be supplemented with additional Boeing 747 aircraft.
Finally things are moving at Ostend, let's hope this time it's for real.

Interesting, a few months ago, a well-known politician from Ostend stated that part of the airport would be sold to investors and traffic limited to general vaiation in a near future
