AMS Things to know !.

Post by JetB »

I am going to New York (Delta Air) in a week departing from AMS.

This is going to be my first time using Schiphol Airport so can you give me some good information about the best and cheapest way to park my car.

Things to see and do before the flight, shops, restaurants and more.....

Thanks.

If you are going tfrom Belgium the cheapest way to park your car is to leave it at home and go by train!! If from NL train services work well too as the station is in the airport. Suggest you check out the Schiphol website for parking costs etc. as there may be deals on long-term but these parks may be some way from the terminals.

Never understood why people go shopping at airports (unless they have forgotten something, as prices tend to be a bit higher than those elsewhere) but I understand the general travelling public need something to pass the time at the boring airport! I tend to have my bins and notepad with me at the cleanest window I can find.

Take some extra time for security checks.
And there is a pretty good chance that your plane will return when it is near Canada, because USA officials don't allow the Seventies singer Cat Stevens to land in the USA. This is not a joke btw.
On the other hand, the tip about using the train is a good one. The train station is just under the airport terminal. Go upstairs, and you are straight at the check in.
Food and drinks are dutch, enough but factory style for a reasonable price.
And also "yes": the panorama deck is impressive indeed. You can almost touch the big ones.
Enjoy your trip, take care that your trousers don't drop when you have to give your belt to security and don't eat the "broodje kroket".

Yes if you come by train from Belgium, the international train from BRU and Antwerpen etc stops at Schiphol.

You can wander all around lounges 2 and 3, just make sure you keep an eye on the time though, the place is rather big so you don't want to find yourself at the end of pier D 5 minutes before departure.

The Rijksmusem has a local presence in lounge 3, they usually have a few paintings and/or drawings hanging there. There is a casino in lounge 3 too.

In lounge 2, next to pier D, there is a Sushi bar and a Noodle bar. I don't know if they're any good, they are rather expensive.

And do eat the 'broodje kroket'. :-P

Oh and if you end up getting stuck there for several hours, there are some *very* comfortable reclining chairs on the top floor somewhere around the 'bezinningsruimte' (meditation area?), and it's very nice and quiet there.

Now Regi he said he is flying on Delta Airlines. We already know that the turn around when over Canada and not even flying to the US only applies to KLM or European airlines!

If you're living in 'Oost-' or 'West-Vlaanderen' the easiest and cheapest way to get the Schiphol is by taking the boat at Breskens and then the train at Vlissingen (Flushing). There is plenty of free parking space at the Breskens ferry terminal and the ferry and train schedules are nicely tuned. You don't need to change trains anymore and you'll be in Schiphol in about the same time the trains from Antwerp need to get there...

Oh yes, I missed his delta Air remark. Right. No problem, his flight will not be stopped.

Thank you for the information, but taking the train is not an option !.

So do you have a choice parking your car @ AMS, like for example Interparking and Car hotel in Brussels ?. Who is going to be the cheapest.

Can I expect the same (poor) service from Delta in AMS as I am used to in BRU ?.

02/12 AMS - JFK B767-300
06/12 JFK - ATL MD88
06/12 ATL - AMS B767-300

There is a long term parking at the airport itself.
Probably more info on the airport website

They claim that if you park for like 2 or 3 weeks, then you can park for just 6 euro per day.

Some people would claim that it is made out of the stuff that comes out the rear of a jet engine after a bird/other animal strike.

But many people like them, in fact, I think I will have one for lunch today.
