National strike in Belgium 07/10 & 10/10

Post by Sebas »

According to De Standaard, a national strike in Belgium on friday 07/10 (socialistic trade union) and on monday 10/10 (christian trade union) is imminent.

Civil servants are also called to strike. This is something that already happened in the past.

Is this going to affect normal operations in our airports?

Will Belgocontrol strike? Is there a sort of agreement with the controllers which guarantees that a minimal number of controllers must work even when there's a strike?

I remember a sort-like strike in France some months ago which caused many delays and flight cancellations and reduced air traffic control services.

The strike of monday is cancelled. Tomorrow at least no trains to and from Brussels airport, concerning the other services I have no idea what will happen...

Indeed, no trains tomorrow. This will effect the number of people working at the airport as a lot of them come to work by train.
Besides that, there will possibly be some delays due to the fact that some of the staff from the ground handling companies will join the strike. This means delays for departures and people will have to wait longer for their bagage on arrival.

Operations will be disturbed heavily, as the cargo division will be functioning at less then half capacity (brucargo will be blocked) , people of aviapartner will work at very low numbers, normally there will be only one runway in effect, etc etc

I think it will be a hectic day for the entire country here

Forgive my naivity for I am an expatriate, but why is there a strike tomorrow? What is the protest about?

[political opinion deleted by admin sn26567: I will make no difference between left and right on this]

New response from admin sn26567: because the socialist trade union FGTB-ABVV did not accept the government proposals for the end of careers (early retirments).

suggestion:
take a far away island, like Ascension or the Falklands.
Take our beloved friends of gate Gourmet, BA, and Brussels ground handling who consider it a right to not do what they are paid for.
Combine the two.
You have a winner.

I don't know of this is the beginning of the strike, but I heard today at work that Brucargo will be blocked as from 6 o'clock.

Let the strike be healthy for me; i'll go to work by bike...

This morning our dispatch told that they already start
blocking the entrances of staff parkings at 01u00 am.
They told us that maybe we could park our car near
the parking at brucargo, and take the shuttlebus to
the terminal, if they let the bus pass!

Hearing some collegues at check-in, only few
people will join the strike, this only for the
check-in people !!!!
don't know how people react at catering, cleaning and
lugage department

I will have to walk to my office :( Not fun cause the road goes up and down :?

Cannot believe Charleroi Airport is closed!!! How unfair to all passengers who hardly paid anything to go away! Some people might lose quit a lot of money cause of that! Too late to cancel Hotel or Rental car...

Is that fair towards all people? Might sound political once again but who on earh do they think they are to disrupt people's life like that? :frown:

All flights are CANCELLED on the CRL website.

There is also a topic on wizzair.com,

Flight cancellation due to the national general strike in Belgium on 7 October

Published:2005. 10. 06. 12:15:14
We regret to inform our passengers that due to a general strike in Belgium tomorrow, Friday 7th October, we are forced to cancel the following flights:

Warsaw - Brussels Charleroi: 17:30-19:25
Brussels Charleroi - Warsaw: 19:55-21:50
Budapest - Brussels Charleroi: 19:30-21:30
Brussels Charleroi -Budapest: 22:00-23:55

We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused.

That is indeed not very funny nor acceptable for their pax.

Idem dito for FR.

There is no doubt it willbe an interesting day for Belgium as a whole and all the people who are unfortunate enough to get caught up in the dispute.

People who lived before you and me fought for the right to do that. However, as the other trade union underlines, we're still negotiating and it's not a good time for a strike. Negotiation comes before strike, not vice versa.

Anyway, back on topic: 2 times good news from SNBA: no flights will be cancelled :D & they offer an exceptional great service to those who have made reservations tomorrow. Those travellers can change their reservation to another date in October and within the valid period of their ticket, for free! :D Well done & nice idea!

@Sebas, if all flights are running on time, why do SN offer to change tickets for people? Why not do this all the time? I don't quite get this!
