Of course. Why do they touch so hardly can be explained by a lot of factors. But what I said is that a failure of a landing gear at that rate of descent (estimated between 500 and 1000ft/min) is not abnormal at all. Remember that the certification takes a 10ft/sec at Max landing weight, which is only 600ft/min...

It seems the Q400 is building quite a landing gear reputation... A variety of causes though, in all fairness, but some hefty damages nevertheless, and a few write offs as a result. But it doesn't look like it can cope with a heavy impact very well. Either by landing, or uncontrolled freefall as in two of the SAS cases...
This one looks like it went down to its fuselage quite gently given the circumstances. Certainly didn't slam onto it, so hopefully it didn't buckle too badly and can be salvaged to fly another day.

But most important, everybody came out unharmed.

What was the damage to the tarmac? From the on-board video it seems at least the propellers have scraped a bit of it, the fuselage or the wing tip too perhaps?
