Re: Boeing 787 news

Post by RoMax »

It was expected for a long time already, but nothing official until now. Air Canada will convert its order of 37 Boeing 787 aircraft. The order was for 37 788's, but it was expected for years already that AC would convert partly to the 789. They now announced that they'll take 15 of the initial version and 22 of the larger 787-9.

AC expects the first Dreamlinder in the first quarter of 2014 and six in total for 2014 instead of seven (a delivery planned for December 2014 has been pushed backwards to January 2015).
The 787 will be used for both replacement of older aircraft (most of which will simply move to Rouge), but they'll also focus on international growth.
"Starting in the first quarter 2014, we expect to take delivery of our first of 37 Boeing 787 aircraft, comprised of 15 787-8s and 22 787-9s," Rousseau tells analysts. "We're excited about the international growth opportunities in front of us and the industry-leading unit cost that this aircraft provides."

ANA finds faulty wiring on fire extinguishers in three 787s

ANA has found an electrical wiring problem in the fire extinguishers of the engines of three of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets. The problem was first discovered during pre-flight maintenance of a jet at Tokyo airport.

The airline is investigating whether the faulty wiring would have caused the extinguisher to malfunction in case on an engine fire.

"At least one" United 787 was also found with improper engine fire extinguisher wiring.

The problem could have been that, if the pilot tries to extinguish a fire on engine #1, he could be blushing engine #2. A real safety issue in perspective.

Well no! Boeing found out that improper wiring of 787 engine fire extinguishers has been traced to the supplier, but Boeing claims that the wiring problem is not a "safety of flight issue".

They say it's not an immediate safety of flight issue because this is only a part of the whole fire suspension system. It's a critical emergency system that requires multi-level security, the fire extinguishers are one of them. Though it's something that has to be solved as fast as possible. It could be called a 'regular' issue with a 'relative new' aircraft, but when talking about the 787 it's one of the many many issues..

Xiamen Airlines firmed up a long pending order for 6 Boeing 787-8 aircraft. China Southern (Xiamen's mother company) already signed a letter of intent in May 2011, but the order was pending government approvel which was granted this week.
They are very specific about the first delivery: July 25, 2014. I'm not sure if Boeing reserved production slots for Xiamen and therefore they are able to get them so early (just like with American), this is possible as these slots have to be firmed up a certain amount of months before production starts. Or Xiamen will take some of the early birds ANA, LAN and so on don't want anymore (like Transaero will be taking 4 of the early ones that were planned for ANA).
Xiamen Airlines will use the aircraft for expansion to Europa and the US.

The first Boeing 787-9 now officially rolled-out. It was previously already seen on several pictures, including some official ones from Boeing, but it wasn't actually rolled out yet as test equipment still had to be installed.
Now the 787-9 will go through pre-flight preperations, which will take some weeks. Date for first flight is not known to the public, Boeing only says "later this summer".

I've not looked at seat configuration but I'm a bit surprised that, with 6 meters more length, the 789 only accomodates 40 more pax (on a 8 seats per row scheme I suppose), compared to the shorter version; that would mean 1.2 meter pitch. Probably equipment such as kitchens and toilets are larger than on the 788 then.

Boeing reached the mark of 80 Dreamliner deliveries (of which 7 so far this month):

- ANA: 22
- JAL: 10
- Qatar Airways: 8
- United: 7
- Air India: 7
- Ethiopian Airlines: 5
- LOT: 5
- Thomson: 4
- LAN: 3
- China Southern: 3
- British Airways: 2
- Norwegian (ILFC): 2
- Hainan: 1
- Aeromexico (ILFC): 1

Royal Brunei and Jetstar will be the next two airlines to take their first 787 (in September/October). This week more deliveries could occur (up to 4) to Hainan (1), Air India (2) and JAL (1). But except for JAL, these are not the most consistent airlines when it comes to taking up their aircraft (AI still has difficulties with financing their 787's, especially now the Indian financial climate is bad).

The CEO of Qatar Airways Akbar Al Baker was in Barcelona today to sign a sponsorship deal with FC Barcelona. As a result, six of the 787s and 777s of Qatar Airways will be painted in FC Barcelona colours.

Not another problem, but a nice performance of the 787 collision avoidance system: two 787-8s from the same company LAN flying on the same altitude on the same route UL302 in opposite directions had a near-miss at the border between Chile and Peru. The TCAS ordered one of the aircraft to climb and the other one to make a sharp left turn, thus avoiding a collision.

I have a question: why are two aircraft allowed on the same route in opposite directions at the same altitude?

When and where did you here end of 2013? It's been (March) 2014 for a long time already. Their first 787 may enter FAL already this year, but apperently it will take quite some time before they actually plan to take delivery of their first aircraft. I believe I already mentionned this some time ago in this topic (including some information about the amount of planned 787's in 2014).

I have been hearing first quarter of 2014 for quite a while already. Earlier this month, Air Canada gave some comments about their 787 order (as they decided to convert 22 of their 37 orders to the bigger 787-9 instead of the base version). At the same time they said they'll take delivery of their first 787 in the first quarter of 2014, with a total of 6 in the whole year. Previously seven was planned, but one aircraft was shifted from December 2014 to January 2015.

I believe I already linked this article to this topic, but that may be difficult to find with the rather large amount of posts in this topic.
