If you look on 'flightaware', it seems that the aircraft turned back when already overhead the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe a medical emergency ? But in that case, why didn't they choose Gander that was closer ?

CO61 landed in Goose Bay on 17OCT09, indeed. But that was an outbound-BRU flight, opposed to the US flight today. Still don't know the reason for that diversion, but some people say they encountered some serious headwinds...

US Airways Flight Status tool on their website mentions the diversion into YYR and the new ETA in BRU. The return flight has following message:

Delayed
LMT-FLT DLY DUE TO PRIOR AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE DELAY Estimated time of departure is 5:00 PM.

Very bad news:

Today, a 73 year old passenger died on a Pegasus flight from Antalya to Brussels. Three nurses onboard apparently gave first aid, but the passenger was declared dead upon arrival.

The flight was expected in BRU at 14h25, but made a detour to Prague. PGT5259 then arrived in BRU at 17h40.

A similar incident happened on an PGT flight from Dalaman to Brussels on 25-SEP.

Today's Afriqiyah Airways' flight Tripoli-Brussels (A319) diverted to Malta to offload a sick passenger.

The a/c arrived in BRU at 13h58 (ETA was 10h50).

A Southern Air Cargo Boeing 747-200, registration N760SA performing flight 9S-902P from Liege (Belgium) to Portugal with 5 crew, experienced a fire of engine #2 (inner left hand, CF6) on departure from Liege. The crew declared emergency, extinguished the fire using the engine's fire suppression system, climbed to 7000 feet and went about 100nm to the Belgian Coast dumping fuel overhead the Channel. The airplane subsequently headed back and landed safely in Liege about one hour after departure.

Isn't a P after a flight number normally only used for a positioning flight?

I agree with the previous comments that if the a/c was only carrying fuel for a destination in mainland Portugal, then it should not have been over the max landing weight. There are perhaps two possible explanations, firstly that the destination was not mainland Portugal, we don't even know the exact destination so far. Secondly, that the a/c was "tankering" fuel, and in fact carrying fuel for its onward journey from wherever it was going. I don't know how the fuel price compares in Liege vs Portugal, but Southern Air do have quite a large operation at Liege so this is also possible.

Landing gear problem for A333 OO-SFM operating SN453 from BRU to Bujumbura, right after take-off. Came back and landed overweight on 25R.
