IB planning to stop operating from Barcelona ?

Post by airbuske »

Yesterday in El Mundo , today at luchtzak

IB would be planning to drop the 'majority' of routes which operate out of BCN, except el puente aéreo (the BCN-MAD shuttle), due to the lack of profitability of the 'point to point' connections, said IB president Fernando Conte.

The elimination of these routes would give the new LCC airline, projected by IB and other companies, a larger growth potential.

This measure will not only affect El Prat, but also other national airports, although BCN would be the most affected.

Mr Conte explained that, amid the elimination of routes, "in no case are we talking about an eventual closedown of IB operations out of BCN". Barcelona airport is the second most important in Spain, after MAD-Barajas. Since the celebration of the Olympic Games it has increased it's passenger volume over a 100%, from 10 million in 1992 to over 27 million in 2005.

The 'director plan' (strategy plan) for the 2006-2008 period concentrates on a reorganization of its operations focusing on profitability rather than growth, what will mean expanding their long-haul connections (+13%) more than the European ones (+0,7%), and reducing their domestic flights (-17%).

"The selective restructuring of the domestic market attends the internal requirements that the market demands", according to Conte.

The mayor and la Generalitat (the regional government) have expressed their concern and worry over this decision.

So it seems that El Prat will become more and more a airport with low cost carriers. Isn't Iberia already operating as a low cost carrier on european destinations ?

In line with what swissair, and later swiss did in Geneva. Concentrating on a single hub at ZRH, opening the way for easyjet to dominate traffic out of GVA.

What about Alitalia?
Will they follow suite and concentrate on Milan exclusively for long hauls?

I think that it is a bit more complicated for Alitalia as Rome is the capital of Italy, AZ will not drop domestic trafic that easily. Rome is a very important touristic centre that atracts not only europeans - many of whom fly in to town on lcc through Ciampino - but many north americans and Asians too. Besides ethnic travel from the Rome region towards North America and Latin America (specially caracas and buenos aires) is much more important than the one generated from Northern Italy...Last and not least the Vatican attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year from throughout the world..I think that AZ will not be very smart in abandoning FCO as a secondary longhaul hub..

Right b720
Well I think around the same lines
In the italian case Rome will remain a prior l/h destination along with Milan...
Let's also not forget that Italy is roughly twice more populated (and therefore probably also twice more rich) than Spain is ...
Italy can probably afford 2 hubs, Germany has 3 ! (FRA, MUC and to a lesser extent DUS)

SN stopped flying to BCN in favour of codeshares with IB. This might be an opportunity to reopen the route.

With the merger SNBA/VEX I suppose that they will stay flying between BRU and BCN?

Though I agree with you on the importance of Rome and Milan in Italy, the numbers regarding the population you have is simply wrong - Spain is estimated to have areoun 43 million inhabitants, Italy is said to have approx. 58.

Every airport wants to call itself a hub, so this term should be used with some caution, If DUS counts, so does HAM... But in the end, I think only MUC and FRA qualifiy in Germany.

Today in Finanzas :

Iberia will reduce its capacity on the domestic market with 17 %.

Not only flights from Barcelona will be affected but also flights
from Malaga Airport and Valencia Airport.

3 airports where Vueling Airlines has become a big player.

Thank you for the correction Bernhardt, the figures indeed have changed a lot making Italy barely a third more poulated than Spain !
;o)
It seems the short haul routes of IB are not bringing profit enough when not coupled to long hauls inside the MAD hub ...
A lesson to be pondered about at SN headquarters ?
Cheers !

Today in Ultima Hora:

Other airlines would like to have Iberia slots at Barcelona airport.

If Iberia would reduce or stop their operations at Barcelona airport
are Air Europa , Spanair and Air Madrid candidates for the slots from
Iberia at El Prat Airport.

These days is it very difficult to obtain slots at Barcelona Airport.

Spanair would like to become the biggest carrier at El Prat airport.

Air Madrid would like to increase their services from Barcelona.
They would like to start this winter flights from Barcelona to
Palma de Mallorca , Ibiza , Menorca, Milaan, Nice and Lyon.

Air Europa would like to increase their services to Palma de Mallorca , Ibiza and Menorca if Iberia disappears

Why would SN also not try to get back some slots?
