At the contrary (and for the zillionth time): Lufthansa has saved Brussels Airlines ten years ago, when the Belgians didn't want to invest in their flag airline / national carrier / whatever you want to call it. Without the support from Lufthansa, Etienne Davignon would have thrown in the towel.

Lufthansa has saved Brussels Airlines and they won't "kill" them today neither: by owning them, Lufthansa controls the leading carrier at Brussels. If they would "kill" Brussels Airlines, like you repeatedly state, someone else will become that main carrier. It may be Eurowings, but that's a risk that Lufthansa won't take.

I agree, yes, and LH is still an added value for SN in 2019.
SN keeps its Belgian AOC, its 4.000 employees, BRU is still their hub, PAX are still coming from the BRU catchment area. Especially AFI pax are double digit % growing year after year, maintening the hope to see new destinations opening in the future (maybe LOS or LBV). And six belgian icons A320 are flying around (seven next year).

A name reform in not yet in sight. No brussels airlines "intercontinental" close by Eurowings.
As another proposal, the name "Belgianwings" could also merge the "family name" Eurowings with the belgian specificity. Knowing that the name "Germanwings" is also used in the LH Group.
Fingers crossed that the EW ugly livery will never become the group standard, and that EW will change it anyway for something more classy.
Cheers

Dear mates,
OK you got it : LH did not kill SN... I did not use the right words, driven by emotion.
But the facts are : LH erases SN belgian identity and does not invest in the belgian carrier devlpt. Thus, the future of BRU as a hub does not look good!

Interesting (though nothing really new here...) about the SN European fleet transitioning into EW brand and colours. Of course there is still plenty of uncertainty as far as long haul activities are concerned.

Dear member,
For sure LH can't forbid BRU and even SN to look for any development and does it in any case want to ?
But its understandable that SN must in priority become profitable, and that any intercontinental and mostly african new route that could be opened in the future must put all its chances together to be a moneymaker for SN (and LH) management.
BRU and SN management are surely focussing to develop new routes with high local demand from any airline, especially being part of Star Alliance and Oneworld. For instance the result of the long negociations between BRU and SQ or LA can give a benchmark.
Cheers

SN has been looking at the A321LR, an ideal plane for thinner intercontinental routes (North America, e.g. Boston, or Africa, to make some destinations daily instead of twice-weekly). Other European airlines are successfully introducing the A321LR on such routes, namely TAP and Aer Lingus.

The uniformed A321LR, with almost the same cabin configuration, is only for Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian
On this way they can exchange the plane between each other

because they don't want SN to succeed on the transatlantic routes, that's only for their main carriers LH OS LX .. sad that LH doesn't see the potential out of BRU, the 321LR could really make the difference in offering more frequencies even to Africa ..

For Lufthansa Group, it doesn't matter who fills the planes: LH, SN or EW. They own them for 100%, so every profit from every single airline is 100% for the group. And a loss at SN is a loss for the Lufthansa Group. So what matters, is "can Brussels Airlines fill a plane at a good yield?". This is a simple and basic market rule, but apparently one that many LH-bashers fail to accept.

Boston: as Aviation24.be member JustPlanes has explained already, there is too much competition at this moment. Yield in Y is gone, so one needs enough C passengers to compensate.

Africa: why would Brussels Airlines take the risk of flying daily with a half full aircraft, when they are making good profit with full twice-weekly triangle flights? Apart from the fact that loading enough fuel for the return flight might be a problem for some AFI destinations (I know there was such problem for a triangle destination - don't know if that is solved).

If SN is flying full A330s in triangle flights to somewhere in Africa, they can replace them by two full A321LR non-stop flights to the same destinations. No-go for LH.

LH also promised to keep a Belgian touch after integration into EW. Which Belgian touch? The OO registration? OMG!

Passenger-wise that's probably around the same. But flying two planes in stead of one would require double the amount of fuel. The A321LR will be more fuel efficient compared to the A330, but I doubt it will use half the amount of fuel :/

Why send a A321 to Africa? Cargo is the big business there.

Indeed do not underestimate the cargo revenue. It's very valuable for SN.

The newer A330 with increased max-weight helps a lot for this purpose, they don't have to make choices anymore or limit the cargo capacity.

The A321LR is a pure niche airplane. Well suited for Aer Lingus for instance.

But for a niche market like Luanda where Brussels Airlines is not transporting cargo it could be a solution.

And it could be in alternation with some North American flights if they fly only 3 times a week to Angola.

I would be smart to use one A321LR with Lufthansa to Luanda I'm not sure Lufthansa is doing big business in Cargo!
Hasta la victoria siempre.
