I think that a landing at Riga would have saved a lot of fuel !Passenger wrote: ↑25 Jan 2017, 12:26Reason for the diversion to AMS: one unruly passenger (source: Dutch Scramble forum).Passenger wrote: ↑25 Jan 2017, 07:54 Cathay Pacific CX254 London Heathrow-Hong Kong returned near Riga (Latvia) and diverted to AMS Amsterdam.

Re: Diversions from around the globe (medical, technical, ...) 2017
FR24 says that average flying time is 11,5 hours. So maybe the crew knew that any diversion would lead to the grounding of the aircraft because of crew overtime? Landing and offloading the passenger means also finding and offloading his/her luggage and refueling. So the crew probably preferred an airport where their airline has a base (and good facilities), like AMS.

Finnair flight AY28 (A350-900 reg. OH-LWD, HoChi Minh City-Helsinki) landed in Moscow SVO for refuelling; the flight had to take a longer route to HEL due to restrictions in Indian airspace.
It has taken off from SVO and is currently continuing its flight to HEL.

There's no certainty in aviation. An Emirates' A380 (flight EK406) diverts to New Zealand Ohakea air base for fuel as Auckland's runway is blocked by Singapore Airlines' A380.

There is a major computer problem at Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland - Dutch ATC - this morning, causing delays for incoming flights, mainly at AMS Amsterdam.
KLM's KL-1684 Bilbao-Amsterdam diverted to BRU (ERJ190 PH-EZF), but is repositioning to AMS right now. Some other flights into AMS diverted to Eindhoven, Maastricht or Rotterdam.

Flight JU610 from Belgrade to Prague, on Friday 3 Feb, was diverted to Berlin due to heavy fog in the Czech capital.
While on the ground in Berlin the aircraft encountered a technical issue resulting in cancellation of flights JU610 and JU611.
Air Serbia are providing assistance to guests on JU610 in order to transfer them to Prague as quickly as possible and minimise disruptions.
Passengers due to fly on JU611 will be transferred onto flight JU615 which departs Prague at 20.35 tonight.
