ABW523, B744 from SVO to LGG, performing 2 holdings overhead LGG because of flaps problems, before an uneventful landing tonight.

Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
I don't know to which topic this belongs:
Looking at the BRU arrivals table this morning, I noticed that OO-SFN performed SN502 (JFK-BRU) last night in 5h35. I checked on FR24 and saw a speed of up to 1259 km/h (shortly after leaving Newfoundland)!
That's above the speed of sound! I thought commercial aircraft couldn't reach that speed (except Conord and KonKordsi of course). Any expert here to explain that? I assume the wind speed plays a role, but still...
Thanks

Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
You have to look at it in the correct frame of reference. It was not doing the speed of sound, knowing the A330, it will have been doing anywhere from 80% to 85% of the speed of sound.
The high speed reading comes from the tailwind it was having. The speed you can see on services like FR24 etc. are ground speeds, not the speed at which the aircraft is flying through the air.
It's exactly the same concept as when you're walking on a train in motion. The train might be travelling at 120kph, or it might be going backwards. However, from your point of view, all you're doing is walking at about 5kph inside your frame of reference (the train). If you walk forwards, you're doing 125 kph relative to the earth, if you're walking backwards, you'll be doing 115 kph relative to the earth.
Translating this to an aircraft in flight, the "train" is equal to the mass of air the aircraft is flying in.
Speed of sound is always measured relative to the mass of air the aircraft is moving in, not relative to the ground.

Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
Convair: all about the wind (jet stream). Noticed it as well and it's not that uncommon, but indeed: 5h35 for a JFK-BRU is very fast.
Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
I suspected that it was the explanation. Thank you both for confirming.

And on the other side ....
About 125 kts headwind going West.

Today, we have on this route, between Nova Scotia and Ireland, windspeeds on FL34 between 280 and 400 km/h. Thas explains the topspeed of 1259 km/h. (850+400).

Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
I presume that would be FL340? Winds of 280-400 kph at 3400ft would be quite disconcerting.

Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
Indeed FL340, sorry. In the Met-office, we working with pressure levels, this is 250hpa.
Re: Abnormalities in BRU-ANR-CRL-LGG-OST in 2018
No worries! You don’t happen to work in the met office at BRU, do you?

Hello
The RwandAir flight to Kigali has been canceled yesterday (18Jan17). The RwandAir A330 is currently at Brussels. Do you know what happened ? Thanks

Aircraft arrived with 20 minutes delay from LGW (London), so it looks indeed like AOG at BRU:rwandan-flyer wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 00:33 The RwandAir flight to Kigali has been canceled yesterday (18Jan17). The RwandAir A330 is currently at Brussels. Do you know what happened ? Thanks

Thanks for the info.
The RwandAir A330 left Brussels 2 hours ago, it's now en route to Kigali
