Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug

Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
I was looking for a flight DUS-BOS (and return) around xmas/new year, can I wait for someone else taking over the Air Berlin flights, or will it take a lot longer before another airline has everything in place to fly this route?
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
Lufthansa might start quite rapidly in November (before Eurowings takes over sometime in 2018), but the prices might be much higher than Air Berlin...

For DUS-BOS I recommend Aer Lingus.
(It will be via Dublin)...

With a 4h35min layover in Dublin outbound and 2h inbound. I'm looking around for AMS, BRU,... but was wondering whether it might be interesting to wait for someone taking over the Air Berlin flights, wondering how long that would take :/Charlie Roy wrote: ↑10 Oct 2017, 22:54 For DUS-BOS I recommend Aer Lingus.

I know, but from AMS there's only a 1h15 layover. But nothing beats a direct flight
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
According to "Trends" a deal has been signed today between Air Berlin and Lufthansa in which Lufthansa takes over 81 planes and 3000 employees from Air Berlin... It's unclear what will happen with the rest of Air Berlin...

Again, a similar strange rumour ...
"One of the rumours I recently heard is that long haul Eurowings will be started/developed on the AOC of Brussels Airlines, with German crew and bases (ex-AB?). This would eventually supersede the co-operation with SunExpress, who currently flies Eurowings Long Haul.
If this turns out to be true, it's highly likely that at least the long haul destinations will become part of the Star Alliance network."

I know some of you think ailriners.net is not worth to be consulted. But hey this is the forum and we should also discuss real rumours, no?
I personally think it won't happen, but sometimes life is full of surprises ...

We already asked the question to Brussels Airlines a few days ago. The response was immediate: "Pure speculation".DannyVDB wrote: ↑13 Oct 2017, 09:54 "One of the rumours I recently heard is that long haul Eurowings will be started/developed on the AOC of Brussels Airlines, with German crew and bases (ex-AB?). So, the rumour is coming back?

Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
Where there's smoke, there's fire? But why would EW need the AOC of SN for long haul? They have already A330 and fly with these A330 no?
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
EW doesn't have any A330's on their AOC nor do they fly them. The EW A330's are operated by SunExpress Deutschland. EW never operated widebodies (except for one year in the '90's when they operated the A310 but not sure if it was operated by EW or by Hapag Lloyd, not much to find about it).

Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
Then why don't they take the AOC of SunExpress Deutschland for the long haul if they already operate these A330?
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
The relationship between Germany and Turkey isn't exactly the best at the moment. Sunexpress is a 50/50 JV between Turkish & Lufthansa so they might want to be ready for future problems.
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
More likely there is a maximum number of A330s which can be operated by Sun Express in the agreement with LH unions.
Sun Express offers the world' s worst contracts for A330 crew.
To get around the agreement with the unions, but still save a lot of money compared with the LH payscales, SN could be an option.
The A330s will be in EW colours though, with a small "operated by Brussels Airlines" inscription.

The final Air Berlin long-haul flight from Dusseldorf (to Fort Myers, Florida) is on its way (and making a detour to avoid Ophelia)...
Well worth a water salute!

Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
It was said earlier that Lufthansa was at risk of being crossed by competition authorities in Germany and the EU after taking large chunks of Air Berlin. In fact, the first shot came from Austria.
Austrian competition authorities said on Friday they believed Lufthansa, which also owns Austrian Airlines, would be too dominant in Vienna if it owned Austria-based Niki, an Air Berlin subsidiary which is part of the deal.
Up to you now, Mr. Spohr!

Düsseldorf Airport also posted a short movie of the departure of the last long haul flight on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dus/videos/1543550572350206/

Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
The last Air Berlin long haul flight #AB7001 made a go around (probably intentional) and landed 08:02 local time.

How many tickets could have been refunded with the fuel that was spoiled for that show go-around?quixoticguide wrote: ↑16 Oct 2017, 09:13 The last Air Berlin long haul flight #AB7001 made a go around (probably intentional) and landed 08:02 local time.
All Air Berlin tickets bought and paid for flights after 28th October are worthless. No refund, no transfer to other airlines.
Re: Air Berlin files for insolvency as Etihad pulls funding plug
Austrian Airlines is looking to hire about 100 new pilots, with hopes of picking up most of them from Air Berlin.
